The sound of thunder, the wind rustling the leaves in the trees, the first snowflakes of winter, the first rainbow of spring. Watching the billowing cumulus clouds on a warm summers day. Waiting for that first clap of thunder. The pitter patter of raindrops outside my window. I love weather! It fascinates me. I am driven to try and understand what makes the atmosphere work. I used to listen to NOAA Weather Radio on the school bus, at school, during recess, in my sleep. The principal at my high school welcomed me into his office, during my lunch break, to watch The Weather Channel. I was a geek. One hundred percent pure weather geek. I can remember when the NWS had the old radar system. You could watch the sweep line move over precipitation and light it up for a few seconds...it would then fade away. One of the meteorologists, at our local office, gave me a lesson on how to view into storms (this was before Doppler Radar). He showed me how to find hail spikes coming out of the top of a thunderstorm using the old radar system. He would twirl this little knob and the radar beam would go up, higher and higher, into the storm. I was in weather heaven! I still remember the smell of facsimile paper at the local flight service station. FRESH facsimile paper, as the machine would slowly spit out the latest day one severe weather outlook or surface map. I would have my fingers on it before the ink would dry! I used to pester the lady at the flight station, here in Paducah, Kentucky. We would dial up radars, through the telephone, and watch storms in Texas or Oklahoma (that was in the days when Texas and Oklahoma actually got storms) I think she enjoyed it as much as I did.

Today I went to YouTube, "Storm Chasers" and the "Discovery Channel", to see some videos of tornadoes. What I have seen really amazed me. There are many storm chasers who will do everything to get amazing pictures and videos of tornadoes. While many of us will listen to storm warnings on the radio and will hide in underground shelters, those guys do the opposite. Before I post some videos of the most amazing tornadoes ever recorded on film, let's first understand what "tornado" is? Tornado or Twister is a a column of air, rotating vertically in very high speed, which gets a contact with the ground via cumuliform cloud or underneath it. When watched from a distance, you can observe the shape of the tornado itself. There are various types of tornadoes, including waterspout, landspout and multiple vortex. The tornado size and speed vary from one tornado to another. Tornadoes usually pass several kilometers until they get weakened and demolished.

From drained batteries to frostbit fingers, cold weather photography is a completely different prospect than hot weather shooting. While there are some simple solutions to most cold weather photography problems, these solutions may not be the ones you would first think about. Condensation Condensation is a photographer's nightmare. Just like a pair of eyeglasses fogging up when changing temperatures rapidly, a camera lens (and the inside of the camera) can fog up with condensation. Condensation is water forming on surfaces that are significantly colder or warmer than the air surrounding it. Technically, this means that if your camera goes into an area where the air is warm condensation will form if the camera is colder than the dew point. The opposite is also true. If your camera goes into a cold air area and the camera is warmer than the dew point then condensation can form.

Don't aim for the shapeless ones. Nor for the one that will turn your image into a solid gray background. Look for edges. Highlights. Shadows. Clouds are huge, transient, white mountains. Some of nature's most intricate three-dimensional sculture. Try to find their best side. In general, anything dealing with autumn should include leaves. On the trees. Falling. On the ground. In a pile. Some color balancing work was needed to achieve the final effect, but even the original showed the pattern of red and blue streams made obvious in exaggeration.

Photography in the winter can produce dramatic and beautiful images of snow-capped mountains, forests draped in crystal sheets of ice, or birds huddling beneath a rooftop out of the driving sleet. But photography in cold weather is much more challenging for photographers and equipment than warm weather shooting. Everyone knows to wear a coat or sweater if you’re going to be outside for any length of time in cold weather. Faces and hands are the most endangered body parts in cold weather photography. But photographers can’t completely muffle their faces or hands or they won’t be able to handle their camera and other equipment successfully. To keep most of your face warm while shooting, try wearing a ski mask to reduce the amount of skin exposed to cold wind and wintry weather. A ski mask will not only keep your face warm, it will help reduce the amount of hot air you breathe onto your camera, which conflicts with the ambient temperature to cause condensation. Keeping your hands warm is particularly problematic for photographers in the winter. Gloves keep your hands warm between shots, but often you’ll have to remove your gloves to handle the camera or equipment more easily and accurately. Bare hands expose your fingers to cold and wind, which can cause numb fingers and frostbite. Depending on how cold the weather is, you may even risk having your fingers freeze to the metal on the camera, which can damage your skin and the equipment.
