We’ve seen the Romans, the Saxons, the Vikings the Normans, the English and even the French army came and had a go back in 1797 when they tried to invade Fishguard. Despite all this, we still stand a proud and resilient bunch. We’ve looked after the remains of our past. You’ll discover ancient castles where famous battles were fought, fortresses built to keep invaders at bay, as well as more modern records of the industrial revolution, like our coal mines. We really can’t do justice to thousands of years of fascinating history, so here is just a taster looking at some of the most interesting stories and people. You can find out more by using the links at the bottom of the page. No look at our history is complete without reference to Owain Glyndwr, the last native Welsh person to hold the title Prince of Wales. A descendant of the princes of Powys, in 1400 he instigated a brave revolt against English rule. Initially it was successful but the uprising was eventually quashed by the English. Glyndwr was last seen in 1412 and was never captured.

The MAs may be taken as a one-year full-time or a two-year part-time course. Applicants should normally possess a first degree in History (or related field) with a first or upper second class Honours.You should note that as part of the application process, you must include a statement (around 500 words) outlining areas of interest and the topic upon which they hope to write their dissertation. This replaces the 'personal statement'. The MA is designed to act as a self-regulated year of further study, and provide a preparatory year for PhD candidates. Through the core modules, the MA provides a wide range of transferable skills and gives a thorough grounding in research skills and methods, theoretical concepts and the techniques of conducting and writing up an independent research project in Welsh History. These are developed in the tailored research skills modules which provide further transferable and subject-specific skills. In the option modules, you will gain a firm subject-based knowledge in Welsh History as a preparation for the dissertation or further study. Throughout, you are encouraged to investigate different approaches - theoretical and practical - to the problems of understanding historical studies and research.

Material remains of the period 3500 to 1000 B.C. particularly the funerary monuments- chambered tombs throw some light about Wales in the prehistoric times. These provide indications of simple regional manifestations of features characteristic of Britain region as a whole of the times. From the late Bronze Age onwards there seems to have started an influx of the Celtic-speaking people though perhaps not in very big numbers. Metalwork associated with feasting and military skills has been found at Llyn Fawr and Llyn Cerrig Bach. There has also been found a broad distribution of fortified sites. These indicate a stratified but politically fragmented, warlike society. Such social characteristics prevailed in Wales up to the Roman period. The period between the first and fourth centuries had been the period of Roman Wales. Similar Roman culture as that of other parts of Britain prevailed. However, the Mediterranean culture can be exemplified best in Southern Wales. Important Roman towns flourished here.

Undoubtedly the best book on Welsh history in recent years is that of Dr. John Davies, "Hanes Cymru", or, in its English translation, "A History of Wales". It covers the entire span of Welsh history from pre-history and the Red Lady of Paviland to modern times and the miners' strike of 1984. It's a book well worth reading or even just dipping into for information about any particular period. As I can't hope to emulate John Davies's scholarship I've just put together a few significant dates in Welsh history which you may not be aware of. It is believed that Dewi Sant . (St David), our patron saint lived during this period. There are many churches dedicated to him throughout Wales, including the cathedral at St David's ( Tyddewi ). In the Middle Ages, 3 pilgrimages to St. David's was equivalent to one to Rome. His day is celebrated on 1st March and is known as Dydd Gwyl Ddewi During this period Hywel Dda (Hywel the Good) formulated the laws which were used throughout Wales until Edward I enforced the use of English law. The laws of Hywel Dda were more enlightened than some of the English laws which replaced them Prince Madog is alleged to have sailed the Atlantic and discovered America and left descendants among the Indian tribes there Prince Llywelyn ( Llywelyn ein Llyw Olaf ), the last of the Princes of Wales was killed in battle at Cilmeri. His baby daughter Gwenllian was taken by Edward I's forces and kept in a convent in Lincolnshire for the remainder of her life (50+ years!) to prevent her being a focus of rebellion by the Welsh against their English conquerors
