Often the day-to-day work of the organisation and fundraising depends entirely or in part on volunteers. In not-for-profit organisations, this includes the volunteer members of the management committee who are not paid for accepting their roles. Finding the best volunteers for your organisation and making sure that you support your volunteers to do their job will benefit both your organisation and its volunteers. Before your organisation begins working with volunteers, you will need to decide: You should also consider whether you would be able to pay reimbursements for travel expenses and if you have appropriate insurance cover including volunteer personal accident and/or public liability insurance. Some volunteers will approach an organisation directly because they know about what you do and are interested. You could also decide to advertise to find someone with particular skills. There are many places that you can advertise for free including newsletters that are published by your organisation or another group or the internet.

Posted by Trollet at 7:49 PM 1 comments Posted by Trollet at 12:27 PM 1 comments A lively and interesting Zangbeton ceremony, dinner festivities, vappu celebration and excursions to Ouidah, Abomey and Cotonou have filled my last weeks. A delegation group from Finland visited Villa Karo so I had quite a lot of program with them and we went on various trips, which was pleasant. I also had a vappu celebration at my place, which is rather amusing as I never celebrate vappu in Finland. Vappu celebration in Grand Popo meant dinner for about 30 people, if not more, drinks and drumming until the early morning. The next day, the 1st of May, there was a staff and stipendiat lunch at Villa Karo which was very amusing. The amount of laughter and dancing always blows me away.

Working on both sides of the volunteer line over the years has given me some insight into how to look after your volunteers, as well as getting great productivity out of them. 1. Capacity What can and can't a volunteer do? Let's keep in mind that smaller, regional groups are often one hundred per cent volunteer run. The Board are all volunteers, so is the General Manager, the promotions person, the office staff etc. Keep this in mind when deciding what tasks a volunteer can and can't do. Because in smaller organisations volunteers do it all! 2. Burn Out Some organisations, tend to overuse and eventually burn out their best volunteers. For example, a local group sees Toby who is great with kids and is asked to help with the kids program. Then the local group finds out Toby plays guitar so they ask him to help in the youth band, (with 2 practices a week), then they are so impressed they ask Toby to lead a weekly counselling group. On the odd weekend that Toby isn't playing in the band, they ask him to help with busy bees and other weekend activities. Then they also want Toby to go to a volunteers conference, and weekend retreat for their volunteers, and a couple of trips into the city. By this stage Toby is feeling quite overwhelmed and under-appreciated. The local group asks Toby and his wife to attend a marriage enrichment weekend - but unfortunately by this stage Toby has already burnt out and has suffered a nervous breakdown, is on anti-depressants and his wife has left him!

    Extractions: Who Are We and What Do We Do? Bramingham Wood is an area of natural woodland, located immediately to the north of the town of Luton in the County of Bedfordshire. In 1985, the Woodland Trust, a nation-wide charity now with in excess of 100,000 members, took over the management and subsequently the ownership of Bramingham Wood from the then private owners. Consisting of approximately 45 acres, the wood is classified as an "ancient woodland" in that it has known to have been in existence for at least 400 years and has probably been a woodland for much longer. Soon after the Trust took over the wood, the Bramingham Wood Volunteers were formed - an initially unskilled group of local residents who cared about their local wood. The group have carried out the work on behalf of the Trust since this time, creating firstly a network of paths through the wood. Then the "coppice with standards" management was re-introduced which involves cutting an acre of wood every year on a 12 year cycle, leaving particularly good standard trees to grow on.
