    Joseph T. Altemus, Henry Altemus’ father, began book binding in the 1820’s at 24 Cherry Street in Philadelphia. Apparently he had apprenticed with his uncle, Shadrach Taylor

    Extractions: Henry Altemus Company Henry Altemus and the Henry Altemus Company (1842-1936) was a popular and prolific Philadelphia publisher which started as a bookbinder and evolved into a publisher of photographic albums, bibles, decorative reprints of fiction, religious and moralistic books, juvenile series books, fairy tales, puzzle books, etc. In December, 1853 Joseph Altemus contracted typhoid fever and passed away. His son Henry took over the business. Samuel Altemus stayed with the company until at least the mid 1860's. Henry was only 20 at the time but had served as an apprentice with his father for some years. Clearly Altemus was overshadowed initially by other more established bookbinders in the Philadelphia area. But gradually he made a solid name for himself as an innovative bookbinder. He was the first to use cutting machines for trimming the edges of books and the first to use a backing machine (The American Bookmaker 2, p. 194, 1886).

    Extractions: Frances Ridley Havergal, the daughter of a Church of England minister, is well known for her great hymns of consecration including the famous Take My Life and Let It Be. She also wrote hymn melodies, religious tracts, and works for children. In 1852/3 she studied in the Louisenschule, Dusseldorf, and at Oberkassel. Otherwise she led a quiet life, not enjoying consistent good health; she travelled, in particular to Switzerland. She supported the Church Missionary Society. She died of peritonitis at Caswell Bay on the Gower Peninsula in Wales. Her sisters saw much of her work published posthumously. Havergal College, a private girls' school in Toronto, is named after her. The composer Havergal Brian adopted the name as a tribute to the Havergal family. The story of Frances Ridley Havergal's life is the history of the growth of love to Christ in her own soul.
