He was educated at Saint John's College, Oxford, and became a college tutor. Later he was appointed teacher of the learned languages to Lady Elizabeth (afterwards Queen Elizabeth). Following this he became Latin Secretary to Queen Mary, and when Elizabeth acceded to the throne, was continued in the position. He is best known by his work, The School Master, a plain and perfect way of teaching children to speak, write and read the Latin tongue. He was renowned as a student of Greek and Latin. In 1548 he became tutor to the Princess, afterward Queen, Elizabeth, with whom he read Cicero, Livy, Sophocles, and other classical writers. Ascham traveled extensively as secretary to the English ambassador to Charles V. He wrote a famous treatise on archery, called Toxophilus. His best known work, however, is The Scolemaster, expressive of his methods of teaching Latin, and giving in a general way his conception of the proper method of education. The Scolemaster will well repay careful reading. Although he lived in an age when Latin was the language of the educated, and was himself the leading Latin scholar of his day, Ascham took pride in saying of the Toxophilus, that he had "written this Englishe matter in the Englishe for Englishemen." He acted as Princess Elizabeth 's tutor in Greek and Latin between 1548-50, and served in the administrations of Edward VI Mary I , and Elizabeth I. The name Ascham could be more properly spelt Askham, being derived from Askham near York . He was born at Kirby Wiske , a village in the North Riding of Yorkshire , near Northallerton , the third son of John Ascham, steward to Lord Scrope of Bolton . The family name of his mother Margaret is unknown, but she is said to have been well connected. The authority for this statement, as for most here concerning Ascham's early life, is Edward Grant , headmaster of Westminster , who collected and edited his letters and delivered a panegyrical oration on his life in 1576.
