Love and Freindship, written at 14, (an epistolary send-up of the cult of sensibility), takes its name from a very un-Austen-like phenomenon: a spelling mistake. At 15 she produced A History of England ("by a partial, ignorant and prejudiced historian"). Critically well received from publication on (Walter Scott articulated the enduring perception of her "exquisite touch which renders ordinary commonplace things and characters interesting"), her fans are passionately committed to an oeuvre which, maybe more than any other, bears repeated reading. Some dissenters, such as Charlotte Brontë, have found her cold and limited.

The seventh of eight kids born to a scholarly village rector, she wrote from age 12 with her first novel at 15. For family entertainment, the entire family would tell stories, stimulating her young imagination. Her father was a kindly, reserved cleric and her mother, witty. She had six brothers and a beloved sister, Cassandra. There were few opportunities available to a young woman in that time and place; women were not even allowed into the universities. Jane had two years of formal education. As a young girl she was as high-spirited and silly as any and had several suitors. Her flirtation with the attractive but impecunious Tom Lefroy, whose family insisted that he marry money, set neighborhood tongues wagging. Later, she suffered a deeper embarrassment in first accepting, then rejecting the very next morning, the proposal of Harris Wither, who was suitable from a social viewpoint, but not to her romantic heart. She remained a lifelong spinster, later becoming somewhat tight-lipped with chastity. She had six novels published from 1811, a remarkable accomplishment for a woman in that era, including "Pride and Prejudice," "Emma," "Sense and Sensibility" and "Persuasion." Her health failed in 1815, probably from Addison's disease, and she died peacefully at home on 6/18/1817, 4:30 AM, Winchester, England.

Although Austen was widely read in her lifetime, she published her works anonymously. The most urgent preoccupation of her young, well-bred heroines is courtship, and finally marriage in the world dominated by men. Austen herself never married. Her best-known books include PRIDE AND PREJUDICE (1813) and EMMA (1816). Virginia Woolf called her "the most perfect artist among women." "It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife." (from Pride and Prejudice Jane Austen was born in Steventon, Hampshire, where her father was a rector. She was the second daughter and seventh child in a family of eight. The first 25 years of her life Austen spent in Hampshire. She was mostly tutored at home, and irregularly at school. Her parents were avid readers and she received a broader education than many women of her time. Her favorite poet was Cowper. On her father's retirement, the family sold off everything, including Jane's piano, and moved to Bath. Austen started to write for family amusement as a child. Her earliest-known writings date from about 1787. Very shy about her writing, she wrote on small pieces of paper that she slipped under the desk plotter if anyone came into the room. In her letters she observed the daily life of her family and fiends in an intimate and gossipy manner: "James danced with Alethea, and cut up the turkey last night with great perseverance. You say nothing of the silk stockings; I flatter myself, therefore, that Charles has not purchased any, as I cannot very well afford to pay for them; all my money is spent in buying white gloves and pink persian."
