He devoted most of his life and expended much of his private fortune and a government subsidy in an attempt to perfect a mechanical calculating machine that foreshadowed present-day machines. He was a founder of the Royal Astronomical Society. He wrote Tables of Logarithms (1827) and an autobiography (1864). See biographies by M. Moseley (1970) and D. Halacy (1970). His previous Difference Engine was a special purpose device intended for the production of tables. As the inventor of the first universal digital computer, he can indeed be considered a profound thinker. The use of Jacquard punch cards, of chains and subassemblies, and ultimately the logical structure of the modern computer - all come from Babbage. The son of a Tory banker, Babbage was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge. He began his work on the Difference Engine through funding from the British Government in 1827. He founded the British Association for the Advancement of Science in 1832 and published "Economy of Manufactures and Machinery" in 1833. Babbage began work on the Analytical Engine in 1834 and founded the Statistical Society of London the following year. In 1871, he published "Passages from the Life of a Philosopher." In his memoir, he wrote that "Miracles are not the breach of established laws, but... indicate the existence of far higher law." An inept public speaker, he was impatient, critical and crotchety. His great intelligence was not matched by judgment, patience or sympathy. He abhorred street musicians and other nuisances of life on the street whom he found an unwelcome distraction and he was thoroughly disliked by the everyday man who came within range of his distaste. "Many years before, I had purchased a house in a very quiet locality," he wrote in 1864. Then came a hackney stand, and beer shops and coffeehouses, and people. The din beneath his window, the German bands, the pickpockets, came with industry. The railroad and factory brought crowds to London, and with them came meanness and thievery.

Extractions: Categories: Inventor Mathematicians 1791 - Charles Babbage was born 26th of December in Totnes, Devonshire England. 1810 - Matriculated at Trinity College, Cambridge. Appalled by the state of mathematical instruction there, Babbage helped to organize the Analytical Society, which played a decisive role in weakening the grip of blind Newton-worship at Cambridge and Oxford. 1813 - Published a translation of LaCroix's Differential and Integral Calculus, accompanied by several volumes of mathematical examples. 1814 - Babbage married Georgiana Whitmore. They had eight children, only three of whom survived to maturity. 1822 - Babbage produced the first model of the calculating engine that would be the consuming interest of his life. The machine produced mathematical tables, and since its operation was based upon the mathematical theory of finite differences, he called it a "difference engine." The government was interested, and a vague promise of financial assistance encouraged Babbage to begin building a full-scale machine. 1828-1839 - Babbage was Lucasian professor of mathematics at Cambridge.

Extractions: God is in control! HistoryTour.net Father of Computing by Rit Nosotro First Published:: 2003 the Power, Wisdom, and Goodness of God, as Manifested in the Creation, His last machine was the prototype for the modern day computer. This analytical machine could be told or “programmed” to do certain calculations using punch cards in which the input was determined. The machine was made to "chase his own tail" (charlesbabbage.net) or in other words, feed the output of the machine to the input side to do another calculation. The machine had two basic parts: the “mill” and the “store”. The “mill” took information from the “store” to be calculated and fed to the output. Since the “mill” would be the “CPU” or central processing unit, and the “store” would be the memory, Charles is credited as the father of modern computing. Although circuitry was not Charles Babbage’s idea, he gave birth “metaphorically speaking” to the modern layout of the computer, the memory-CPU configuration. It is no doubt that Charles Babbage was a great inventor, but more importantly, he was indeed a man of God. In the advancement of the Bible
