Extractions: Home Information Contents Search ... Links Edward Lytton Bulwer, better known as Bulwer-Lytton, was a famous English novelist, playwright, and poet. He was born in London May 25, 1803, and died June 18, 1873. He was privately educated and later entered Cambridge, where he was graduated in 1828. Upon his marriage to Rosina Doyle Wheeler, in 1827, Bulwer's mother stopped his allowance of one thousand pounds a year and he was forced to write for a living. He produced many successful novels of society, crime, and mystery, and for about a year was editor of the New Monthly. From 1831 to 1841 he was a Member of Parliament, and later Secretary for the Colonies. In 1836 he was separated from his wife, but they continued to quarrel in print for years. In 1838 he was made a baronet, and in 1866 a baron. For most modern readers his novels are boring, an exception being "The Last Days of Pompeii," which was written in 1834. By some authorities, "The Last of the Barons" is considered his best work. "Zanoni" and "A Strange Story" are tales of the supernatural. REFERENCES: W. A. Frost

It was a dark night, though the full moon rose as I left the enclosed lands, and passed out upon the marshes. Beyond their dark line there was a ribbon of clear sky, hardly broad enough to hold the red large moon. In a few minutes she had ascended out of that clear field, in among the piled mountains of cloud. There was a melancholy wind, and the marshes were very dismal. A stranger would have found them insupportable, and even to me they were so oppressive that I hesitated, half inclined to go back. But, I knew them well, and could have found my way on a far darker night, and had no excuse for returning, being there. So, having come there against my inclination, I went on against it. Dickens Bulwer-Lytton It was one of those nights, half dim, half glorious, which mark the early decline of the year. Nature seemed restless and instinct with change; there were those signs in the atmosphere which leave the most experienced in doubt, whether the morning may rise in storm or sunshine. And in this particular period, the skiey influences seem to tincture the animal life with their own mysterious and wayward spirit of change. The birds desert their summer haunts; an unaccountable inquietude pervades the brute creation; even men in this unsettled season have considered themselves, more (than at others) stirred by the motion and whisperings of their genius. And every creature that flows upon the tide of the Universal Life of Things, feels upon the ruffled surface, the mighty and solemn change, which is at work within its depths.
