Dewey's philosophy of education, instrumentalism (also called pragmatism), focused on learning-by-doing rather than rote learning and dogmatic instruction, the current practice of his day. A concise summary and explanation of Dewey's educational philosophy can be found in the International Encyclopedia of Education F. Matthias Alexander(1869-1955) was an Australian who developed the educational process that is today commonly called the Alexander Technique - a method of helping people learn how to improve their posture, balance and coordination. The two men met around 1918 in New York City when Dewey had a series of lessons with Alexander. These, and subsequent lessons and conversations and correspondence, had a profound impact on Dewey. He felt that his lessons taught him how to stop and think before acting and enabled him to hold a philosophical position calmly once he had taken it or to change it if new evidence appeared.

Dewey's areas of work included philosophy, psychology, education, politics, and social thought. At an event in celebration of his 90th birthday, in 1949, Dewey described his life goal as the quest to obtain "a moderately clear and distinct idea of what the problems are that underlie the difficulties and evils which we experience in fact; that is to say, in practical life." This concern with the practical, socially responsible life is a key element of the philosophical concept of pragmatism , which Dewey explicated in many of his writings. Dewey is also considered to be a preeminent voice in American educational philosophy , with emphasis on what is generally called "progressive education." Dewey was just beginning his work in the 1890s, but his lifetime of intellectual accomplishments (40 books and over 700 articles, in addition to countless letters, lectures, and other published works) continue to play an influential role in many fields of knowledge. Born at the dawn of the great evolutionary debate that has capped off the long-standing conflict of Religion and Science, it is no surprise that a philosophically-minded man such as Dewey would be influenced by the debateand have his own insightful input. Dewey started his career as a Christian but over his long lifetime moved towards agnosticism. His philosphical writings start out apologetic; over his life he gradually lost interest in formal religion and focused more on democratic ideals. Moreover, he became very devoted to applying the scientific method of inquiry to both democracy and education. Dewey is grouped with Pierce and William James as founders of Pragmatism . Pragmatism has never been concretely defined, but at its core is a philosophical view of human knowledge and thought as being biological in nature; in modern psychological terms, it is equivalent to the gestalt or paradigm theory of knowledgenamely that our knowledge is meaningful in perspective to its relationship to us. Taken to an extreme, it could imply that there is no objectivity to knowledge. While many have criticized pragmatism (and Dewey's opinion), it is obvious from a study of Dewey's writings that he did not deny objective truth. Dewey's efforts at defining pragmatism were essentially an effort to reconcile the fallibility of human perspective in relation to objective reality. It's doubtful that Dewey (or any other philosopher) succeeded in this debate.

His work in education , psychology, and social reform has been greatly influential in the United States and around the world. Dewey is also recognized as one of the founders of the philosophical school of pragmatism , the father of functional psychology, and a leading representative of the progressive movement in U.S. education during the first half of the twentieth century. He is known not only for his novel ideas but for his extremely hands-on approach to philosophy. Rather than simply spouting theories, Dewey always tried to put his ideas into action and test them out in the field. He sought to fundamentally change the way people viewed the world by promoting scientific analysis over traditional values and morals. Throughout most of his 92 years, Dewey was an internationally renowned writer, teacher, political reformer, and social activist. He lectured to audiences around the world, he supported the Hull House project in the slums of Chicago , and he was an active member of the American Civil Liberties Union Dewey's extremely scientific and humanistic approach to tackling the issues of his era was radical for its time and remains highly influential today.

Many oppose his thought and the trends it favors. He wrote a huge amount (his collected works run to 37 volumes) and frequently expressed himself unclearly or outright contradicted himself. Perhaps as a consequence, too many criticisms of Dewey are uninformed. There are good grounds for criticizing him, however, and the purpose of this page is to help people do so. I turned up the materials in the course of working on my own critical analysis of Dewey's philosophy, and thought it might help others to make them available on the web.
