Connie M. Doyle holds three degrees in English, including a Ph.D. from Kent State University where she wrote her dissertation on Emily Dickinson. Having been a teacher of English for over 20 years, Dr. Doyle now writes full-time. EMILY DICKINSON, widely regarded as one of America's premier poets of the nineteenth century, is in many ways a poet more of our time than of her own. In both style and content, her verse was, "revolutionary" in her day. Her carefully crafted, often cryptic and elliptical poems voice a deep concern with life's most profound questions, many of them centered upon matters of faith: What is the nature of God? What do I believe? Why am I beset by so much doubt? What is the meaning of my doubt? These are questions growing out of what we often ascribe to "a modern sensibility." Emily Dickinson was modern in that she dared to question "the faith of her fathers" the rather complacent orthodox tradition of the isolated, conservative community of Amherst, Massachusetts, where she spent her days (1830-1886). She was unable to emulate her neighbors' easy acceptance of the patterns of traditional faith inherited from their Puritan forebears even though she was marked by the Christian ethic, the Biblical traditions preached from the pulpit, the cadences of the hymns sung in church, and the Puritan habit of self-scrutiny. These things not unexpectedly became part of the fabric of her poetry.

LA LIBERTA' L'AMORE LA VITA Quella che mi ha colpito di piu' la metto qua... c'è scritto "uomo"... mi piace pensare invece che ci sia scritto persona/individuo... Temo un uomo di poche parole temo un uomo che tace l'arringatore - posso superarlo il chiacchierone - posso intrattenerlo - ma colui che pondera mentre gli altri spendono tutto ciò che hanno - di quest'uomo diffido temo c'egli sia un grande. Non sempre è vero... ma l'invito alla riflessione prima di parlare... serve, invece, sempre... Come sempre è vero che non bisogna fermarsi all'apparenza...

Il lavoro è iniziato a gennaio 2002 con la traduzione delle poesie ed è poi andato avanti con l'inserimento delle lettere e dei frammenti in prosa, per concludersi nel luglio 2009. Per le poesie ho previsto anche l'inserimento di un commento nel quale ho esplicitato la mia interpretazione dei versi e, talvolta, anche considerazioni sulle scelte di traduzione e citazioni tratte dalla sterminata bibliografia dickinsoniana. Per molte poesie ho inserito, oltre al commento, anche delle note che riguardano eventuali versioni alternative, varianti, notizie testuali o quant'altro possa essere utile per chi legge il voluminoso corpus poetico di Emily Dickinson. Per le lettere e i frammenti in prosa mi sono limitato a inserire note esplicative su avvenimenti e personaggi citati nei testi, partendo dalle note dell'edizione delle lettere e dei frammenti in prosa curata da Johnson e Ward nel 1958, che ho cercato di arricchire, ove possibile, con ulteriori informazioni. Oltre alle tre sezioni principali, ho inserito ulteriori altre pagine, tra le quali una cronologia della vita di Emily Dickinson, un elenco degli autori citati nell'intero corpus, una pagina musicale, con la riproduzione di alcuni spartiti e la possibilità di ascoltarli (in formato "midi"), e un elenco delle piante e degli animali citati nelle poesie
