After the 16th century his popularity waned, and interest in him did not revive until the middle of the 20th century. It is thought from Gower's language that he was of Kentish origin, though his family may have come from Yorkshire, and he was clearly a man of some wealth. Allusions in his poetry and other documents, however, indicate that he knew London well and was probably a court official. At one point, he professed acquaintance with Richard II, and in 1399 he was granted two pipes (casks) of wine a year for life by Henry IV as a reward for complimentary references in one of his poems. In 1397, living as a layman in the priory of St. Mary Overie, Southwark, London, Gower married Agnes Groundolf, who survived him. In 1400 Gower described himself as "senex et cecus" ("old and blind"), and on Oct. 24, 1408, his will was proved; he left bequests to the Southwark priory, where he is buried. Gower's three major works are in French, English, and Latin, and he also wrote a series of French

Gower's reputation as a poet has not been nearly as strong as his close contemporary Geoffrey Chaucer , even though the two collaborated quite closely and wrote in rather similar styles. Both were among the earliest poets to write in Middle English, a language which, prior to then, had been thought too vulgar to be capable of literary merit. Like Chaucer, Gower wrote in a style deeply influenced by the Latin and European classics, and he helped to introduce a number of new poetic techniques to the English-speaking world. His primary medium was allegory . Allegory in the Middle Ages served to synthesize ancient and pagan traditions to the Biblical tradition. Gower uses allegory as a means of reflecting on the problems of the church, state and the life of the commoners as well as to examine the spiritual problems and temptations that keep one from realizing the ideals of religion.

Leland was informed that he was of the ancient family of the Gowers of Stitenham, in Yorkshire , and succeeding biographers appear to have taken for granted what that eminent antiquary gives only as a report. Other particulars from Leland are yet more doubtful, as that he was a knight and some time chief justice of the common pleas; but no information respecting any judge of that name can be collected either in the reign of Edward II . during which he is said to have been on the bench, or afterwards. Weever asserts that he was of a Kentish family and, in Caxton’s edition of the “ Confessio Amantis, ” he is said to have been a native of Wales He appears, however, to have studied law, and was a member of the society of the Middle Temple , where it is supposed he met with, and acquired the friendship of Chaucer. The similarity of their studies, and their taste for poetry, were not the only bonds of union. Their political bias was nearly the same. Chaucer attached himself to

So far, I havent found evidence of any proof, so we will begin our chart with Abel Gower Sr. who was a colleague of Kasper Mansker who established an early fort in what is now Goodlettsville, Tennessee. Abel and his son Abel Jr. were both massacred by Indians 10 Nov 1780 while harvesting corn which been planted earlier that year by John Donelson on his claim at Clover Bottoms. There is a historical marker at that location.
