   Extractions: Student, University of North Carolina at Pembroke Joel Chandler Harris was an accomplished and well-known writer in his time. He was known for his journalism skills but most of all for his stories narrated by the character, Uncle Remus. His early career consisted of a typesetter and paragrapher and later an editor as well, although he was not well recognized for his editorial input. Harris was a shy man, and self-conscious of his looks. As an adult he wore a wide brimmed hat even indoors to cover his red hair. Because of his shyness he never appeared publicly to present any of his works. However, he was well known for his sense of humor in his writings and it is believed that perhaps he hid behind his humor because of his low self-esteem. Growing up he was known to often play practical jokes on his friends, which on several occasions turned out to be harmful to the friend. Harris was born in Eatonton, Georgia and was raised by his single mother. His formal education ended by his early teens. At that time, he became a printer’s devil for the Countryman , a local newspaper owned by Joseph Addison Turner. Turner owned the

   Extractions: On July 20, 1879 an undersized thirty-year-old journalist from Atlanta known as Joe Harris began a journey from relative obscurity to interregional fame. On that day, the Atlanta Constitution published the young copy editor's "Story of Mr. Rabbit and Mr. Fox as told by Uncle Remus." Within months, magazines across the country were reprinting his tales, and after more than 1,000 written requests for a collection, the first Uncle Remus book was published in November, 1880. At the time, Harris said his purpose was not ethnology, or folklore analysis, but simply documentation. He doubted that his stories and character sketches would have any lasting historical value. He was wrong. Uncle Remus: Social Context and Ramifications is an attempt to reintroduce Harris' tales, and his legendary narrator, while placing them in a historical context. The primary sources and commentaries we offer hopefully will shed light on Harris' purpose in publishing his stories and the public response to both his Remus tales and his other works. They will make observations about post-Civil War black culture, and Southern society in general, using the stories and the reactions they engendered as points of reference. Hopefully, this collection will offer other students of the South one or two new insights into the region's endlessly complex myths and meanings.

    Extractions: National Register photograph by Yen Tang This country retreat on Snap Bean Farm was once the home of Joel Chandler Harris, author of the Uncle Remus Tales . Harris was also a prominent journalist and editor of the Atlanta Constitution newspaper. Influential black songwriter, author and statesman, James Weldon Johnson, said in 1921 "the Uncle Remus Tales constitute the greatest body of folklore that America has produced." Harris had just published his first Uncle Remus book when he moved to this house in 1881, and did most of his subsequent writing here until his death in 1908. More commonly known as the Wren's Nest, today it is the oldest house museum in Atlanta. Largely unchanged since Harris's death, the historic home contains the original Harris furnishings as well as the original paint colors. It is an excellent and rare example of the early Victorian Queen Anne style in the Atlanta area. The house was dubbed the Wren's Nest in 1900, when the Harris children discovered a wren had built its nest inside their mailbox. They promptly erected a second mailbox so the birds would not be disturbed. The Wren's Nest was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1962.

Harris created Uncle Remus and the Brer Rabbit stories. There is a little Uncle Remus museum in Eatonton and it is worth your time. My wife Mary and I were there in October [1997]. We stocked up on some biographical materials on Harris, a CD-ROM with eleven of the Brer Rabbit tales and some printed collections of favorite stories. Armed with a child's simplification of "Brer Rabbit and the Tar Baby" plus the CD-ROM I then spent a few days in Irving, Texas with a precocious 2 1/3 year old named Gavin Patrick Killough. After only two hearings of Tar Baby, Gavin was mastering the unfamiliar English dialect and pretending that he was Brer Rabbit's angry antagonist, Brer Fox. Gavin knew that when I paused every time Brer Rabbit had butted the tar baby with a different part of his anatomy, it was time for Gavin to add the refrain, "And Brer Fox, he lay low." Theodore Roosevelt called journalist Joel Chandler Harris a national treasure. Harris's tales keep on being reissued and read. Disney gave us the film, "SONG OF THE SOUTH" and two generations of kids still sing its songs.
