Because of family misfortune, society girl Jill Mackie (Betty Bouton) is forced to work in a department store for a living. Her circumstances send her to the verge of a breakdown, and she wins sympathy from the store's owner, Charles Hemingway ( Percy Marmont ). Hemingway's wife (Clarissa Selwyn) only married him for his money, and Jill provides him the companionship he has missed. Because the wife refuses to get a divorce, Jill and Hemingway have no choice but to carry on their affair in secret. Eventually he becomes ill and dies. With the money she has reluctantly accepted from Hemingway, Jill goes to France, where she meets and falls in love with Henry Adams ( Malcolm McGregor ). Extractions: For answers to almost any 1930 census question you can think of, see these National Archives Census Pages. Photocopies of the entire census page may be obtained from the Belleville Public Library for a small fee [link is offsite]. Inquire at your local library for other ways to obtain this census on microfilm, CD-ROM, or through an online subscription. Deciphering the ED and sheet numbers ED stands for Enumeration District. The numbers below represent the County (St. Clair = 82), the ED number, and then the sheet number. All of these numbers can be found in the upper right hand corner of each census sheet. Technically, a census 'page' equals two sheets, numbered sequentially: 1A, 1B, 2A, 2B, and so on. If sheets are out-of-sequence on the microfilm, we will note it within the transcription. Be aware that the machine-stamped number located in the upper right-hand corner on every-other census sheet was not used for this transcription.

22 Archive News In ERBzine Some of the notables include Ray Kroc, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Ernest Hemingway, Percy Julian, Jane Hamilton, Cubs Hall of Famer Joe Tinker and entrepreneurs who founded Mars Candy http://www.erbzine.com/news/news22.html
Extractions: The Pixar creative team spent Tuesday morning exploring the massive Edgar Rice Burroughs archives in the ERB, Inc. offices on Ventura Blvd. Pixar's Jim Morris (vp), Andrew Stanton (director), Mark Andrews (script) discussed the "John Carter of Mars" film project with Burroughs representatives, Danton Burroughs, Sandra Galfas and Jim Sullos. All six members at the meeting expressed a deep commitment to the project, acknowledging that they had been inspired by Burroughs' creations from a very early age. This is evidenced in the excitement held for the John Carter property and the plans for a film trilogy faithful to the Burroughs books. Projected release date is sometime before 2012. Danton Burroughs presented the creative team with a wealth of resources, including art samples and books by ERB scholars such as Irwin Porges and John F. Roy. They noted that their major resource to date had been the thousands of official ERB, Inc. Webpages and Webzines.

Suicide, Ethics Of Cassius, Thomas Chatterton, Samuel Romilly, Heinrich von Kleist, Gerard de Nerval, Ludwig Boltzmann, Vladimir Maiakovskii, Wilhelm Stekel, Stefan Zweig, Ernest Hemingway, Percy http://www.texttribe.com/routledge/S/Suicide, ethics of.html
Extractions: Suicide has been condemned as necessarily immoral by most Western religions and also by many philosophers. It is argued that suicide defies the will of God, that it is socially harmful and that it is opposed to 'nature'. According to Kant, those who commit suicide 'degrade' humanity by treating themselves as things rather than as persons; furthermore, since they are the subject of moral acts, they 'root out' morality by removing themselves from the scene. In opposition to this tradition the Stoics and the philosophers of the Enlightenment maintained that there is nothing necessarily immoral about suicide. It is sometimes unwise, causing needless suffering, but it is frequently entirely rational and occasionally even heroic. Judging by the reforms in laws against suicide and the reactions to the suicides of prominent persons in recent decades, it appears that the Enlightenment position is becoming very generally accepted. Twilight of the Idols (1888: §36), 'it is indecent to live longer - to go on vegetating in cowardly dependence on physicians and medications, after the meaning of life... has been lost, ought to prompt a profound contempt in society'.
