Humphry Davy was born on 17 December 1778 in Penzance in Cornwall. He was apprenticed to a surgeon and aged 19 went to Bristol to study science. There he investigated gases. He prepared and inhaled nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and in 1800 published the results of his work in 'Researches, Chemical and Philosophical'. This made his reputation and the following year he was hired as an assistant lecturer in chemistry at the Royal Institution. There he was a great success, with his lectures soon becoming a draw for fashionable London society. He became a fellow of the Royal Society in 1803 and was awarded its Copley Medal in 1805. In 1800, the Italian scientist Alessandro Volta had introduced the first battery. Davy used this for what is now called electrolysis and was able to isolate a series of substances for the first time - potassium and sodium in 1807 and calcium, strontium, barium and magnesium the following year. He also studied the forces involved in these separations, inventing the new field of electrochemistry.
Extractions: Great Garden Designers by Sarah Topp When you visit the many beautiful formal gardens we have in Britain you will realise that there has been the hand of a great designer at work. With some of the great landscape gardens you may not realise this as they have been designed to enhance the surrounding landscape. When you see some of the great lakes like the one at Stourhead you will think it is a natural feature, not one that was built specifically to a design in the mid 1700s. Sarah Topp has put together a series of articles on our most famous designers. Enjoy them!

His father, Thomas Middlemore of Edgbaston, Warwickshire, represented one of the oldest families in that county, and had acquired his estate at Edgbaston by marriage with the heiress of Sir Henry Edgbaston; his mother was Ann Lyttleton, of Pillaton Hall, Staffordshire. Attracted to the Carthusian Order , he was professed at the Charterhouse London ordained , and subsequently appointed to the office of procurator . Although few details of his life have come down, it is certain that he was greatly esteemed for his learning and piety by the prior [Saint] John Houghton , and by the community generally. In 1534 the question of Henry VIII's marriage with Anne Boleyn arose to trouble conscientious Catholics , as the king was determined that the more prominent of his subjects should expressly acknowledge the validity of the marriage , and the right of succession of any issue therefrom. Accordingly, the royal commissions paid a visit to the

He was a virtuous and good-hearted youth, who delighted to visit prisoners and sick persons , to instruct the ignorant , and generally to exercise the corporal and spiritual works of mercy . In 1591 he was taken seriously ill, and in his delirium he called Queen Elizabeth a harlot and a heretic . He was overheard by some Protestants , and before he was quite convalescent was arrested and committed to Winchester jail. At his trial he solemnly averred that he could not recollect having used opprobrious epithets about the queen, but that he did not dispute the evidence of the witnesses who had overheard him, and that he was willing to suffer for his words, though unconscious of them. And for these words alone, spoken in delirium, he was condemned and executed Note: Laurence Humphreys was beatified by Pope Pius XI in 1929. His

Extractions: "The gentlemen in front and behind me (as I received the award) were senior civil servants, so I was in good company." "But I played King George III - and I didn't get crowned today," he joked. The 69-year-old actor won international acclaim and was nominated for an Oscar for his role as George III in the film The Madness of King George. Hawthorne, who already holds a CBE, said he knew the Prince of Wales had seen the film, but was not sure if the Queen had. He said that being knighted was not as half a nerve-racking as Oscar night. "The Academy Awards are very disconcerting because you are in competition, whereas here you feel that you are among friends and you know you've already got the award."
