We have now entered the chronic or third stage of disease, in which the body's total metabolic rate has been so compromised that it can no longer produce the discharge symptoms of the acute phase of inflammation, where the healing response most readily occurs. Greater fatigue sets in, more toxins accumulate, and instead of a simple cold and flu, we may find ourselves battling with sinusitis, bronchitis, allergies or even asthma. At this critical point, stronger measures can be introduced to stem the progression of disease and move toward health. Dietary change, detoxification and manipulative therapies can stimulate the vital force to re-awaken from its chronic slumber to heal the body. Unfortunately, many people are so exhausted by discomfort by this time that they cling to approaches that offer symptomatic relief rather than to those that restore health. Stage Four: Degenerative Phase Once we reach the fourth or degenerative stage, long-term inflammation has already caused changes in the body's tissues. Body structures have altered, such as arthritic joints in which cartilage has been destroyed. In this phase, metabolism and vital force are so low that tissue breakdown is occurring faster than regeneration. The body can no longer produce the detoxifying effects of a fever as it did in stage one. It was very likely this phenomenon that prompted Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine, to state, "Give me a fever and I can heal anything."
