The original LADSS website is still available but is now part of a larger collection of project-specific websites. The focus of our research has evolved over time from land use decision support towards policy support and the concepts of resilience and adaptive capacity. At present our core research is in the Scottish Government's Sustainable Farming Systems work package within Environment: Land Use and Rural Stewardship From April 2011 we will be delivering towards the new Scottish Government Research Programme where we will contribute to the Theme entitled A Rural Economy Resilient to Global and Local Change See the research page for more detail. The following list contains links to project-specific websites that come under the LADSS umbrella.

Tarland Catchment - The Macaulay Land Use Research Institute Information about a project to assess water quality and habitat changes in a rural catchment with a view to sustainable use and development. Details of activities, partners, progress and contact details. http://www.macaulay.ac.uk/tarland/
Extractions: About Us News Research Consultancy ... Contact Catchment Management Home The Tarland Catchment Initiative Introduction Typical photograph of arable management in the catchment Increasingly there is a requirement to develop and adopt management strategies to help deal with improving river corridor habitats and diffuse pollution (e.g. the Water Framework Directive). As a part of this change in emphasis the Tarland Catchment Initiative aims to bring scientists, regulators and the local community together to both understand the relationship between land management and how it can be improved using simple pragmatic measures. Furthermore the data and methods used will be undertaken in accessible locations allowing the work to be used as a demonstration available for others to learn from. Within the Catchment there are a range of land use types. On the upper slopes heather moorland gives way to plantation forestry which in turn meets the upper fields of the farms in which beef cattle and sheep are grazed. Interspersed between fields of improved grass. At the centre of the Howe lies the village of Tarland.

Extractions: The Scenario "Let's hurry! We're going to miss our flight!" barks Kate McCallister as she corrals her brood of children towards the departure gate at O'Hare International Airport. "I swear, last year's Paris vacation was so awful that if we don't make this flight and have a decent winter vacation, I'm going to have an embolism!" The gate attendant smiles as she holds out her hands to take the rushing family's tickets. "You're just in time. Have a nice flight..." The McCallister clan settles down in their seats as the plane taxis towards the runway. Peter McCallister leans over and pats his wife on the arm. "Relax, honey. This time tomorrow, we'll be in Saskatoon, and you'll be sunning yourself by the outdoor pool and taking it easy." As the plane takes off into the dusk, the captain's voice comes over the intercom. "Ladies and gentlemen, if you look to your left, you'll see a quite unusual phenomenon - I believe that's a comet flying directly over our fair city of Chicago." As he clicks off the internal radio, he remarks to his first officer, "That's odd. I don't recall reading anything about that in the flight forecast..." As Kate McCallister closes her eyes, she tries to remember if she forgot anything. No... the barrels of holy water are arranged properly in the basement, as is the family's stockade of nailguns. What could she have forgotten... Her eyes bolt open.
James I Concise biography by David Cody and George P. Landow, including a passage from Macaulay s History of England. http://www.victorianweb.org/history/JamesI.html
Extractions: Victorian Web Home Political History Social History Religion ... Economics The only son of the executed Mary Queen of Scots and the murdered Lord Darnley, James became James Vl of Scotland upon his mother's forced abdication in 1567, and James I of Great Britain in 1603. During his reign as King of Scotland, James, by necessity a shrewd and flexible diplomat, showed great skill in balancing opposing and potentially dangerous political forces in Scotland. As King of Great Britain, however, though he succeeded in unifying the thrones, he was a failure, taking little trouble to understand English ways and customs, and inheriting from Elizabeth enormous financial problems with which he was ill equipped to deal. According to the early Victorian Whig historian Thomas Babington Macaulay , one could say of James I "that, if his adminstration had been able and splendid, it would probably have been fatal to our country, and that we owe more to his weakness and meanness than to the wisdom and courage of much better sovereigns" since he believed in the Divine Right of Kings and wished to make himself an absolute ruler. As Macaulay explains in his
