Named for the first printed book, this site has thousands of free ebooks available. While I love paper books so much that I still won't even consider an e-reader, I have to admit that I really like taking advantage of the Project Gutenberg website The good folks at the site take the time to digitize everything in multiple formats. If you want to use an e-reader, fine, but you can also simply download a book to your computer as well. You can browse the books by topic, do a search or simply see what other people are reading. It is like an online library except you never have to return the books and there are no fines. And did I mention that everything to read is free! Charles Dickens and the Bronte sisters feature prominently in the most popular books, but there are also science books, books to teach you needlepoint, history, poetry and more. Every books seems to be carefully chosen, so the site itself is a good reading list. After all, I'm a little lacking in my Kafka and Nietzsche. Of course, they may have to wait until after I read The Time Machine, The Wizard of Oz and How to Analyze People on Sight.

No doubt there will be omissions and errors - if you see an error (for example a book you're working on which isn't listed) please email me and let me know so that I can correct the list. I'll do my best to upload a new copy of the list each week. The list is alphabetic by author and then within author by title of work. Works with unknown/inapplicable authors appear at the end. For each work the status of the work is given. For those works that are not yet released there is also the date when I last updated the record. So, if a work was last updated in 1995 not a lot seems to be happening with it! You may see an * after a release number. This means that as well as the release number shown other release numbers are also involved. The main Gutenberg site will give more details. This is to keep the size of this page down somewhat. Extractions: Distributed Proofreaders provides a web-based method to ease the conversion of Public Domain books into e-books. By dividing the workload into individual pages, many volunteers can work on a book at the same time, which significantly speeds up the creation process. During proofreading, volunteers are presented with a scanned page image and the corresponding OCR text on a single web page. This allows the text to be easily compared to the image, proofread, and sent back to the site. A second volunteer is then presented with the first volunteer's work and the same page image, verifies and corrects the work as necessary, and submits it back to the site. The book then similarly progresses through two formatting rounds using the same web interface. Once all the pages have completed these steps, a post-processor carefully assembles them into an e-book, optionally makes it available to interested parties for 'smooth reading', and submits it to the Project Gutenberg archive.
