The stage name of Harry Houdini was taken in tribute to him, though Houdini later denounced him. Houdin was a watchmaker , and made mechanical toys and machines From an early age he had been interested in juggling and sleight of hand , and in he began to exhibit his skill, and soon became famous for his tricks. The Arabs of Algeria were said to be excited to rebel against French colonialists by false miracles performed by their religious leaders. In , the French government sent Houdin there, hoping that he might perform tricks that were far more impressive, thereby dissolving the excitement of the rebels. Houdin's tricks, it is said, succeeded in breaking up the influence of the priests. Moreover, the Arabs became afraid of Houdin. In one trick, he allowed an Arab to shoot at him with a marked ball, but instead of killing him, the ball was found between his teeth. After that, they believed he could do anything. Houdin is often credited as being "the father of modern magic". Before him, magicians performed in marketplaces and fayres, but Houdin performed magic in theatres and private parties. He also chose to wear formal clothes, like those of his audiences. Many magicians today mimic this by wearing tail-coats, though other magicians view this as old-fashioned and believe that they should wear contemporary clothes.

Extractions: Britannica CD Index Articles Dictionary Help original magician who is considered to be the father of modern conjuring. He was the first magician to use electricity; he improved the signalling method for the "thought transference" trick; and he exposed "fakes" and magicians who relied on supernatural explanations for their feats. Although he did not do away with apparatus, he did, in the main, use what appeared to be common and familiar objects to create an illusion, then supplied the audience with a plausible explanation of the technical procedures involved in the trick. Interested in magic from boyhood, Robert-Houdin was trained as a watchmaker; he later worked on his mechanical devices in Paris and was a magician at the Palais-Royal (1845-55), performing on a bare stage in evening dress instead of in wizard-like costumes. There he created a sensation with his "floating boy" trick achieved with the use of a concealed metal support structure. In 1856 he was sent to Algeria by the French government to combat the influence of the dervishes by duplicating their feats. His influential books, based largely on the best ideas of his predecessors, explain the art of magic and give, as well, step-by-step lessons. They include an autobiography (1857), Confidences d'un prestidigitateur (1859), and

Extractions: Home Famous Magicians About Robert Houdin Perhaps the most famous magician in the world was Harry Houdini. Houdini's legendary escapes and bombastic personality put his stamp forever on the public perception of magic and magicians. Before Houdini, however, there was the man who put his stamp on Houdini's generation France's greatest magician, Jean Eugène Robert-Houdin. Born Jean Eugène Robert in the early 1800s, Houdin would later be added to his name after his first marriage. Young Erich Weiss, some 100 years later, would mistakenly think that Robert-Houdin was the magician's first and last name, and added the letter "i" to the end in belief that it would mean "like Houdin." Robert-Houdin was born to a famous watchmaker from Blois, and was sent to Orleans to study law as a young adult. His fascination with the mechanical and toy making, however, was better suited to his father's trade and so young Jean was sent packing. Determined to make something of his new career as a watchmaker, Jean purchased a set of books on horology. In a delicious twist of fate the bookseller accidentally gave him two volumes of scientific experiments, including the secrets behind many magic tricks. Jean was fascinated and immediately began to learn various sleight-of-hand techniques. He practiced them in secret so as not to be thought frivolous, and both his watchmaking skill and his skill as a magician grew thanks to the constant exercises in manual dexterity.
