Petko Rachev Slaveykov became an itinerant schoolteacher at 17. His early poems were lyrical and patriotic ( Smesena Kitka, Pesnopoyka, Nezavisimost ("Independence"). Pencho Slaveykov, who was inspired especially by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Heinrich Heine, and Friedrich Nietzsche, as well as by the simple eloquence and realism of Bulgarian folk songs, is best known for his unfinished epic poem Kurvava Pesen ("Song of Blood"; written 1911-12; published 1913), which describes the sacrifices of the Bulgarian people in their struggle for independence. He was also an outstanding essayist and translator of German literature. Pencho Slaveykov (left sculpture) and his father Petko (right sculpture) as immortalized on Slaveykov Square in Sofia Pencho Petkov Slaveykov Bulgarian ) (27 April 1866 – 10 June 1912) was a noted Bulgarian poet and one of the participants in the Misal ("Thought") circle. He was the youngest son of the writer Petko Slaveykov Born in Tryavna during the Bulgarian National Revival under Ottoman rule, Pencho was educated there as well as in Stara Zagora and Plovdiv . After an accident in January 1884 he fell ill, and despite lengthy treatment in Plovdiv, Sofia Leipzig Berlin and Paris , this illness left him with serious impairments — he could not walk without a cane, and he wrote and spoke with difficulties. He suffered from melancholic episodes, which forced him to find a cure in literature and to harden his will. Slaveykov's works include poems and intimate lyrics.
