The grammatically correct form of the name Llannefydd is Llanefydd with a single ‘n’, though the historical spellings are variant forms, Lanudid, Llanufudd, Llanyfydd, Llanyfudd or the English Llanyfith or Llanheueth. The double ‘n’ began to appear in the1840’s as people argued that the patron saint was St. Nefydd, though this dedication seems unclear due to a lack of real evidence. Llan means an enclosure, and ufudd, if this is the correct form means dutiful or compliant. The Rev. Wade Evans suggested the name Tefydd as the parton saint of the parish, Tefydd being the father of St Winifred of Holywell. Llannefydd is located on the slopes of the Vale of Clwyd, about five miles from the town of Denbigh in north Wales, the United Kingdom and surrounded by the parishes of Henllan, Llansannan, Llanfair Talhaearn, Abergele and Cefn Meiriadog. The parish varies in height from 200 to 1,125 feet above sea level. The village looks towards the sea and the costal resorts of Towyn, Rhyl and Prestatyn. From the tops of Mynydd y Gaer and Foel Fodiar, the two mountains in the parish, there are magnificent views of the Vale of Clwyd and the bleak but romantic Denbigh Moors. Apart from the village, there are districts or hamlets known as Ffynhonnau, Cefn Berain, Pentref Uchaf, Pentref Isaf and Bont Newydd.

It is probable that the Latin alphabet first came in with Christianity . With the exception of the one bilingual Ogam inscription as yet discovered in Ireland (that at Killeen Cormac) all the inscriptions in Roman letters are certainlylater than 50o. Indeed, apart from the stone reading " LIE Luguaedon Macci Menueh ," they are all contemporary with or later than the Old Irish glosses. With regard to the Ogam inscriptions we cannot make any confident assertions. Owing to the lack of criteria for dating certain Irish sound -changes accurately it is impossible to assign chronological limits for the earlier stones. The latter cannot be later than the 5th century, but there is nothing to show whether they are Christian or not, and if pagan they may be a century or two earlier. It is true that the heroes and druids of the older epics are represented in the stories as making constant use of Ogam letters on wood and stone, and as the state of civilization described in the oldest versions of the Ulster sagas seems largely to go back to the beginning of the Christian era, it is not impossible that this peculiar system of writing had been (Mael-Isu d. 1086). This article is based on a paper delivered at ‘Folksong: Tradition and Revival’, an international conference to celebrate the centenary of the founding of the Folk-Song Society, held at the University of Sheffield, England, 10–12 July 1998. The Welsh Folk-Song Society was launched during the National Eisteddfod of Wales at Caernarfon in 1906 – eight years after the founding of the Folk-Song Society in England, and two years after its Irish counterpart. Fortunately, that event did not signal the beginnings of Welsh folk song collecting, since that activity can be traced back to the pioneer work of that wayward genius, Edward Williams (1747–1826), more commonly known by his bardic name, ‘Iolo Morganwg’, who – under the influence of the love of his native Glamorgan, not to mention laudanum – rewrote the history of Welsh literature and letters with Glamorgan very much centre-stage, thereby creating a magnificent tapestry out of which scholars to this day have found it impossible wholly to unravel the fact and the fiction. Iolo Morganwg began noting folk songs in his manuscripts from around 1795 onwards, probably inspired by the example of Robert Burns in Scotland. As regards folk song collecting, therefore, the Celts seem to have been in the field before the English! The nineteenth century saw some sporadic gathering of Welsh folk songs under the influence of various patriotic, antiquarian, and Romantic movements, Maria Jane Williams’s Ancient National Airs of Gwent and Morganwg (1844) being the most notable result. Some hundred or so folk songs were collected and published in this rather haphazard fashion prior to the twentieth century; but one has to wait until the formation of the Welsh Folk-Song Society for the task to begin in earnest and in a fairly systematic and scientific manner.
