She is not sure of her aspirations and whether or not North Dormer can actually help her conquer them. Lucius Harney is supposed to highlight the fact that Charity is such a weak character, because he is too. They are both searching for growth in their lives but cannot see outside of their existance to grow from their experiences. Mr. Royall, is very similar to Charity in the fact that he is unsure of his person, but he contrasts Charity in a way to compliment her growth as a person. He allows her space enough to grow but a reinforcement when she may need it. Summer was written to show that relationships do not work out when neither character can grow and change together, and that is why in the end, Charity finds herself with her first suitor, her father character, Mr. Royall.

In 1885 she married Edward Wharton, a Boston banker, and a few years later resumed the literary career she had begun tentatively as a young girl. Her major literary model was Henry James , whom she knew, and her work reveals James's concern for artistic form and ethical issues. The best of Wharton's early short stories were collected in The Greater Inclination (1899). Her novel The Valley of Decision was published in 1902, followed in 1905 by the critical and popular success of her novel The House of Mirth, which established her as a leading writer. In the next two decadesbefore the quality of her work began to decline under the demands of writing for women's magazinesshe wrote such novels as The Reef The Custom of the Country Summer (1917), and The Age of Innocence (1920), which won a Pulitzer Prize. The Age of Innocence presents a picture of upper-class New York society in the 1870s. In the story Newland Archer is engaged to May Welland, a beautiful but proper fellow member of elite society, but he falls deeply in love with Ellen Olenska, a member of their circle who has returned to New York to escape her disastrous marriage to a Polish nobleman.
