The Code of the Woosters opens with Bertram Wooster's favourite aunt arriving unannounced with a request that Bertie go visit an antique dealer and cast aspersions on a silver cow creamer as a ruse to bring the price down for Bertie's uncle, a fanatical cow creamer collector. Unfortunately a rival collector buys it before Bertie can get into his act and to make matters worse it is a judge with whom our hero has had a run in. We follow the further meetings and doings of Bertie Woosters through a mirthful chain of people and merry events which tangles itself about poor Bertie linking him to that blasted cow creamer like a prisoner to his iron ball, until finally Bertie's valet Jeeves as usual finally frees him from the whole mess and rids him of all worries. But what the deuce is a cow creamer anyway? It is a vessel, part of a dessert and coffee service, used to serve cream and shaped in the form of a cow. Of course that's what it had to be, and I would have figured it out on my own too. After all anyone will tell you that grand old chap Vincent is no stranger to the more rarified items of trivia and that he can trivialize with the best of them. There's always something working in the old bean as they say. In any case, I'd have been able to figure out the purpose of this object, from the name alone in fact, had I for a minute imagined it possible that such a silly thing could have existed in the first place.

The noted Anglo-American humorist Pelham Grenville Wodehouse (1881-1975) led, up to 1940, a life which was professionally very active and successful, but devoid of striking or soul-shaking experiences. In that year, however, there occurred an event which changed the course of his life very drastically for the next six years, and cast a lasting, though gradually diminishing, shadow over the rest of his existence until his death on February 14, 1975. He and his wife were living semi-permanently at Le Touquet, in France. The town was captured by the Germans on May 22, 1940, and on July 21, he, with the other male aliens in Le Touquet, were sent off to internment-centers, first at Huy in Belgium and then at Tost in Upper Silesia. His internment lasted until June 21, 1941, on which date he was released (solely because he was almost sixty) and was sent to Berlin, where he was joined by his wife (who had been detained in France). Up to this point, nothing untoward had happened except the detainment itself. Soon after arriving in Berlin, however, he undertook to write and record five talks describing his experiences as British Civilian Prisoner no. 796. The talks were intended to reassure his American friends that he was well, and to give a humorous description of his experience as an internee. They were made for broadcasting to the United States, with which Germany was, at the time, not at war. They were, nevertheless, also broadcast later (without Wodehouse's having been consulted) to England. Their actual content was simply a straightforward narrative, wholly unpolitical (as can be seen by reading their actual texts

I was never a Trekkie or a Deadhead or a collector of Shaun Cassidy posters. But since that morning a couple years ago when, after reading P.G. Wodehouse's "Jeeves and the Tie That Binds," I first logged onto alt.fan.wodehouse (AFW), I've been hooked. As Bertie Wooster, "the master's" most effervescent creation, might say, "the L. has dawned, what?" I am a fan. Pronounce him "Woodhouse," thank you kindly. He is a humorist without peer. In 92 books (including 11 novels and countless short stories about the inimitable valet Jeeves), not to mention musical comedies galore, his verbal pyrotechnics made me appreciate the possibilities of language long before I ever considered going to graduate school for English literature. At the core of his appeal is the Wodehousean prose style: a mixture of mangled literary references, Edwardian slang, invented slang, ludicrous formality and remarkable joie de vivre. Here is Bertie on the subject of his friend Boko's troubled love affair: Love's silken bonds are not broken just because the female half of the sketch takes umbrage at the loony behavior of the male partner and slips it across him in a series of impassioned speeches. However devoutly a girl may worship the man of her choice, there always comes a time when she feels an irresistible urge to haul off and let him have it in the neck. I suppose if the young lovers I've known in my time were placed end to end ... they would reach half-way down Piccadilly. And I couldn't think of a single dashed one who hadn't been through what Boko had been through to-night.

Literature Pelham Grenville Wodehouse was born in Guildford, Surrey, as the son of Henry Ernest Wodehouse, a British judge in Hong Kong, and Eleanor (Deane) Wodehouse. Within the family, Wodehouse's first name was abbreviated to "Plum" and later his wife and friends also used this name. Until the age of four he lived in Hong Kong with his parents. On his return to England, he spent much of his childhood in the care of various aunts. Wodehouse attended boarding schools and received his secondary education at Dulwich College, London, which he always remembered with affection. His first paid article was Some Aspects of Game Captaincy . Wodehouse wrote it for a competition sponsored by The Public School Magazine Wodehouse's father did not approve of his writing, and after graduating in 1900 he worked two years at the London branch of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank. Wodehouse started his career in the literary world first as a free-lance writer, contributing humorous stories to Punch and the London Globe , where he had a column called By the Way . Most of Wodehouse's stories appeared first serialized at the Saturday Evening Post . After 1909 he lived and worked long periods in the United States and in France. In 1914 he married Ethel Newton, a widow, whom he had met in New York eight weeks earlier. She had a daughter, Leonora, whom Wodehouse adopted legally.

Wodehouse was the son of a Hong Kong civil servant, who retired through ill health and returned to England, firstly to Dulwich and then to Hay's House, Stableford in Shropshire. Young P. G. Wodehouse, although educated away from home at boarding school returned to Stableford for his holidays and grew to know the district well between the ages of fourteen and twenty one (when the family moved again to Cheltenham). He retained a great affection for the county, particularly the area around Stableford, which is a few miles from Bridgnorth, and it was to become one of the major sources for composite settings in the novels, together with Gloucestershire, Worcestershire and Wiltshire. Wodehouse's last, unfinished novel was Sunset at Blandings which Richard Usborne edited in 1978 after the author's death. Usborne followed up all references to Shropshire in the various Wodehouse novels, but especially this last one, and consulted contemporary railway timetables to see if fictional journeys could actually have been made. All this was in an effort to identify and locate the original of Blandings Castle. Usborne's conclusion was that it must be Buildwas , a mile or so up the Severn from Ironbridge.
