Any area would be approximated by a collection of smaller polygons. One would "exhaust" the area one wanted to measure by for instance filling the area with triangles. Archimedes Archimedes was a prolific scientist and several of his works have come down to us through the ages. In mathematics he is known for instance for the quadrature of the parabola and the approximations of π as well as finding the area of the circle. Archimedes uses methods of Eudoxus to approximate the area of a circle. He both inscribes and circumscribes the circle in a 5-gon, then a 6-gon, etc. Each time he increases the number of sides on the polygons, the approximations will get slightluy better. Archimedes approximates the circle by polygons with up to a 96 sides.
