The main attraction here is still that my 1983 Master's Thesis is on the Web! Click here for the Foreword , which will then give you a link to the rest of the thesis. Any and all comments will be appreciated. For now, however, I'm leading off with an overview of currently-available recordings of the work, heavily sprinkled with my opinions. This text was freely adapted from various posts I've made on the CompuServe MUSICA Forum, but I keep adding to it and revising it from time to time. Of the 51 recordings that I now own of Berlioz' Grande Messe des morts, my favorite in some ways is the one with Jean Fournet conducting the Grand Orchestra of Radio-Paris and the Emile Passani Choir, recorded in occupied Paris more than 50 years ago, in September 1943. This recording, the first to be made, was issued on 78s in Britain and the U.S. sometime around 1948, and later issued on LPs. The sound is rather dim and the closely-miked choir is short of men (understandable given the tough times in France), and there is a slight cut in the Sanctus (essentially, the omission of a written-out repeat). Nevertheless, it is a very passionate reading. Interestingly, it was recorded at St. Eustache, where Berlioz himself had led some performances back in the 1840s. It received a fresh transfer from carefully-preserved original 78 RPM pressings and was reissued in 1998 as Dante-Lys 319-321 in a 3-CD box with Fournet's 1942 recording of

Born into a well-educated family, he was expected to follow in his father's footsteps and practice medicine or, alternatively, law, but he dared to disrespect the wishes of his family in order to pursue music. He studied music in Paris and also took private lessons from teachers who encouraged his 'misfit' genius. Both of his marriages were unhappy, the first consummated after years of infatuation and rejection, only to grow into alienation and separation; the second equally miserable. He had one son, Louis, with his first wife Harriet. The dramatic events of his life were mirrored in his music, which also mirrored the prevalent moods of the age of Romanticism. Berlioz is credited for his large-scale and skillful employment of Romantic features in music, such as orchestral innovations, employment of new instruments and their combination, dramatic brilliance, and depiction of local color. His native France did not recognize his genius and is still hesitant in this respect, but Western European audiences adored his performances. Perhaps because of this he was better known as a conductor than as a composer.

    Extractions: Orchestral Music The Symphonie fantastique of 1830, an orchestral work that contains autobiographical elements, suggested new paths in composition. This was followed four years later by Harold in Italy, for viola and orchestra, with a narrative programme of literary origin, written for but never performed by the great violinist Paganini. Concert overtures include a Shakespearean King Lear and two overtures based on the work of Sir Walter Scott, Waverley and Rob Roy. The overture Le carnaval romain (Roman Carnival) was derived from his opera Benvenuto Cellini, while Le corsaire has at least Byronic overtones. His interest in Shakespeare, increased by his love affair and later unsuccessful marriage with the Shakespearian actress Harriet Smithson, had a further result in the dramatic symphony Romeo and Juliet. Choral Works Other important works by Berlioz include the Eight Scenes from Faust, later revised as The Damnation of Faust, one of the most original of a number compositions based on Goethe's drama. The Christmas oratorio L'enfance du Christ (The Childhood of Christ) is a significant and characteristic work, with the remarkable and extravagantly orchestrated Grande Messe des morts (Requiem) with its brass bands and massed choirs.

His large-scale, brilliantly orchestrated compositions helped create the modern orchestra, and his musical ideas and innovations greatly influenced the development of 19th-century music. Berlioz was sent to Paris by his father in 1821 to study medicine. Inspired by the operas of Christoph Willibald GLUCK, he also studied music, first privately with the composer Jean Francois LESUEUR and then in 1826 at the conservatory with Anton Reicha, a respected professor of counterpoint. After four ill-fated attempts, Berlioz received the prestigious Prix de Rome in 1830 with his cantata Sardanapalus. This permitted a sojourn in Rome at government expense. That same year he was enthusiastically acclaimed for his first major work, the Symphonie fantastique, a musical description of the opium-induced reveries of a frustrated artist. It was inspired by Berlioz's intense adoration of the Irish actress Harriet Smithson (whom he married in 1833) and Thomas DE QUINCEY's Confessions of an English Opium Eater. It is one of the most influential programmatic works of the 19th century.
