He established his reputation as a brilliant performer in England, publishing (1716) his Opus 1 sonatas for violin and continuo, which were famous for their technical difficulty and were widely acclaimed as equal to Corelli's. His other popular works include concerti grossi, of which his Opus 2 and Opus 3 sets became extremely popular in England, holding a place in the popular repertory well into the next century. His theoretical writings, particularly The Art of Playing on the Violin (1730), had considerable influence, and the latter work remains an important reference on the performance of late Baroque music. Classical Editor: Rob Barnett Founder Len Mullenger GEMINIANI, Francesco (Xaviero) d Dublin, 17 September 1762, aged eighty-two He studied first with his father and later with A. Scarlatti and with Corelli, who was the most powerful influence on him. In 1707 he joined the Signoria theatre orchestra in Lucca, and in 1711 became leader of the opera orchestra in Naples. In 1714 he left Italy for London, where he spent most of the rest of his life, moving finally to Ireland. His greatness was as a virtuoso violinist and writer of treatises, though during his lifetime he was overshadowed as a composer by his teacher Corelli and his contemporaries Vivaldi and Handel. He wrote many solo works for violin, eight concerti grossi, numerous other works, six important treatises on violin and harmony and one on playing guitar or cittra.

Born in Luca, he studied under the Italian violinist-composer Arcangelo Corelli and Alessandro Scarlatti . In 1714 he went to England and, after 1733, he settled in Ireland, establishing a career as a brilliant performer and teacher. Of his compositions the best known are his concerti grossi, opus 2 and 3. Through his teaching he transmitted the technique and style of Corelli to later generations. The Art of Playing on the Violin, an invaluable 18th-century treatise on violin playing, was for many years misattributed to Geminiani.
