The University of Houston's College of Engineering presents this series about the machines that make our civilization run, and the people whose ingenuity created them. F or my money, the greatest composer who ever lived was the somewhat shadowy figure of Josquin Desprez. Josquin defined the new music of the Renaissance. You've probably heard his masses. You've surely heard his little choral piece El Grillo the one that makes such a fine imitation of a cricket. When I was in graduate school, musicologists were waging holy wars with one another over Josquin's particulars. Today a few of those particulars are in pretty good order. We know Josquin was born in the northern part of France around 1440. That rough date comes from the 1459 records of a Milan cathedral which identify him as "Jodocho de frantia biscantori." "Jodocho de frantia" was an Italian version of his name. "Biscantori" meant a young adult singer. The spelling of his name changes from place to place and time to time. Historians finally saw that Josquin himself told us how he wanted his name spelled in a five-voice motet

Introduction and major recordings might best be reached via the Renaissance Overview Discographic material below has been collected to this state primarily by Pierre-F. Roberge. Todd M. McComb Josquin Desprez (c.1440/55-1521) is widely regarded as one of the finest and most influential composers in the history of Western music. The stylistic traits of his music, both in contrapuntal technique and in text-setting, gave the defining direction to the High Renaissance and with it the course of music history as a whole. Not only was Josquin admired by Martin Luther as the greatest of composers, but his music was distributed throughout Europe and especially in Germany for decades after his death. The clear textures and text declamation which Josquin employed set the stage not only for the next developments of technical harmony, but for the clarity and conciseness demanded by the Counter-Reformation of Palestrina et al. as well. Josquin's output displays a rare combination of innovation and accomplished technical mastery, and has retained for him a position as the most prominent composer of the early sixteenth century, perhaps the high point of Western music as a whole. Although he spent a substantial portion of his career in Italy, Josquin evidently received his training in the Northern Franco-Flemish style before then, perhaps at the feet of

Extractions: Quick Facts: Earlier research had confused Josquin with Juschinus de Frantia (aka Judochus de Picardia), a singer at the Milan Cathedral from 1459 to 1472. Earlier references to Josquin singing at Milan during this time are now thought to be incorrect. As a result, Josquin was thought to have been an adult in 1459 prompting an estimate of 1440 as his birth. Scholars now believe his birth year is closer to 1450 because his earliest known adult activity occurred in the mid-1470s. He spent most of his career in Italy.

Extractions: The aspect of Josquin's art that fostered such a furor among his contemporaries was its remarkable expressivity: to a far greater extent than anyone before him Josquin attempted to convey the meanings of the words he set. For this reason his most powerful and audacious music is not to be found in his twenty-odd Masses, in which the text remains fixed, but rather in his 100 or so motets, whose texts he could select himself. It was undoubtedly brilliant strokes of this sort that moved Martin Luther to exclaim of Josquin: "He is the master of the notes. They must do as he wills; as for the other composers, they have to do as the notes will. " But there was another aspect to Josquin's personality. When the Duke Hercules d'Este I of Ferrara sought a composer for his court, his secretary recommended Heinrich Isaac over Josquin, because Isaac "is able to get on better with his colleagues and composes new pieces quicker. It is true, Josquin composes better, but he does it only when it suits him and not when it is requested. More than this, Josquin asks 200 ducats while Isaac is pleased with 120." The Duke rejected this advice and hired Josquin, who emerges as the Beethoven of his time, a man who knew his own worth and wrote what and for whom he pleased. The age of the individual was at hand.

Extractions: Josquin's mastery of every important musical genre of his time is evidenced by his surviving works, which include 19 masses, about 100 motets, some 70 French chansons, and a handful of instrumental pieces and Italian frottole (part songs). These were published widely both during his lifetime and long after his death. His musical style was the product of two cultures: the north, where he was born and educated and to which he later returned and the south, where he reached artistic maturity and spent many of the most productive years of his life. The techniques and styles of the two regions coexist in his music, and he had recourse to them throughout his long career. In many of his works the contrapuntal artifices of the Franco-Netherlanders and the chordal, harmonically controlled style of the Italians are fused into a rich and expressive musical language that has as its primary goal the perfect union of words and music. In his motets, melodic imitation is the prevailing technique. Above all, the motets show highly expressive treatment of text, reflecting Josquin's deep religious conviction as well as the age's new humanistic attention to personal expression. To his secular compositions, his polyphonic (multivoiced) chansons, he applied a range of techniques, from simple and chordal to highly imitative. These works set a standard for composers of the later Renaissance that was often emulated but never surpassed.
