Mr. Kancheli had piano lessons as a child at a music school in Tbilisi and studied at the Georgian State Conservatory in Tbilisi from 1959-63, where his composition teacher was I.I. Tuskiya. His many honors include the USSR State Prize (1976, for Symphony No In Memoria di Michelangelo ’). Since 1971, he has served as Director of Music at the Rustaveli Theatre in Tbilisi, for which he has written incidental music for many productions, mostly in cooperation with director Robert Sturua. Mr. Kancheli left Georgia in 1991 (before the collapse of the Soviet Union), after receiving a grant from the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst and stayed in Berlin until 1995. In 1995-96, he served as composer-in-residence to the Royal Flanders Philharmonic in Antwerp and has lived in Belgium since. Critics see his work as representative of the masterpieces of the 20th century. Giya Kancheli was born in 1935 in Tbilisi and graduated from a conservatory there. Since 1991, he has been living in Western Europe, and since 1995 in Antwerp, where he is composer-in-residence for the Royal Flemish Philharmonic. His pieces have been performed by the world’s most renowned musicians: Yuri Bashmet, Gidon Kremer, Denis Russel Davis, and Edward Brunner, to name just a few. Kancheli’s music is also performed by the most celebrated orchestras in the world’s best concert halls.Such major orchestras as the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra, Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, and Georgia’s State Symphonic Orchestras have recorded Kancheli’s works. He also wrote scores for various performances of world-famous plays in Shota Rustaveli’s theater in Tbilisi: The Caucasian Chalk Circle (Bertolt Brecht), Richard III, Macbeth, and Twelfth Night (all by William Shakespeare).
