Hum 2, Maggi Payne Her own program notes on a piece for trombone and tape written for trombonist Abbie Conant. http://www.osborne-conant.org/Hum2.htm
Extractions: Home Bios Music Theater Recordings ... Miscellaneous HUM 2 (2000) for Abbie Conant 7:00 Program notes by Maggi Payne When writing this multi-track work for trombone I could not help but to see the tie-ins to my work of 27 years prior, HUM. That work is scored for one live flutist and six taped flute parts (although it could be performed live with seven performers). HUM 2 is scored for one live trombone plus seven taped parts, although it, too, could be performed live with 8 trombones. The piece deals with expansion/contraction and involves spatial deployment over eight or four speakers. Ideally one should not be able to distinguish the live performer from the taped parts. The piece takes advantage of this surround capability with sounds traveling around, through, and across the space (all built into scoring of the piece), with many instances of extended techniques and delicate pitch alterations (of 2-7 Hz). If the listener is in a good listening position, the space should contract to appear to come very close (as all 8 trombones get very loud) and expand outward (as all 8 trombones get very soft).

Extractions: 8'7" (= 2'2" documents + 85 sound recordings) These materials were collected as a result of a project by the elementary music students of Edward Hines of Wendell, Massachusetts. During the 1993/94 academic year, the music students of Rowe Elementary School of Rowe, Massachusetts, Erving Elementary School of Erving, Massachusetts, and Sunderland Elementary School of Sunderland, Massachusetts wrote to a number of women composers to request scores and recordings of their compositions, as well as information about their lives, work, and musical training. The materials were donated to Sibley Music Library Special Collections in July, 1995. The collection contains a number of scores (mostly reproductions from the composers' manuscripts), many with accompanying recordings on tape, compact disc, video tape, or LP. Also included are the composers' biographical materials, resumes, and letters sent in response to the students' questions. In addition to providing access to the music of these composers, the collection offers information about their careers, training, and compositional processes.
