Extractions: Watt Eez Dee-Zhay? By Kyle Gann DJ Spooky Performs in a New Digital Version of Iannis Xenakis's Kraanerg Iannis Xenakis and DJ Spooky? The genius composer of the 1950s European modernism and the rising bad boy of hip-hop? The Greek resistance fighter who pioneered the calculus of noise and the dreadlocked, ambient sampler of rare recordings and random sounds? High art and low, classical tradition and vernacular, old and young, performing together with the ST-X Ensemble November 12 at Cooper Union's Great Hall? Sounds like a postmodernist dream come true. It would be wonderful, wouldn't it?, to find some rapprochement between the generations. Our young artists yearn for a blessing from their modernist grandfathers, but it doesn't seem forthcoming. The giants who created 20th-century music - Ligeti and Boulez, Babbitt and Elliott Carter - are too trapped in their audience-scorning worldview to recognize that today's young avant-gardists are continuing the work they started. The complexity, noisiness, and downright ugliness of post-war music liberated music from stifling conventions. But it turned out that the modernist grandfathers didn't want to liberate music from European tradition; the only freedom they intended to offer young composers was the freedom to imitate them. So when today's composers committed the sin of writing accessible, vernacular music, most of the older composers turned their back on their wayward progeny. But there's always hope for a reunion, hope that someday, some prodigal son will be welcomed home. That's why I'm on the phone, linking DJ Spooky, aged 27, on tour in Albuquerque, with Monsieur Xenakis, 74, in Paris. Spooky (who writes for the Voice as Paul Miller) has been invited to operate the machinery in a new, digital manifestation of Xenakis's 75-minute, 1968 classic for tape and orchestra

But also something about reviews. I am new here, but ratings should also be separated into those added by around 20 year olds (or under around 25 anyway) and the rest, to get more accurate/serious opinions (few exceptions do exist from both ways and I understand that young people today having access to internet and sites like this one have a much vaster horizon to find and listen to good music than we used to have)! and please do not rate folk albums if you listen to heavy metal, or 60s music if you mainly listen to 90s (and other similar cases), ok (else you get the same...) finally ok if you listen to a cdr/mp3 but be careful when you rate, you just come close, not actually rating/listening the same album, as if you listen to the original vinyl (or reissue lp in some cases - also remastered cds or lossless files from pc) in an expensive (over $50000) hi-end turntable-based system with real bass/resolution/soundstage etc. dot.

(Waarg 1988, Charisma 1971, Analogiques A + B 1958, Thallein 1984, Herma 1960-61, Palimpsest 1978). ST-X Ensemble Xenakis USA , directed by Charles Zacharie Bornstein. Salabert/Vandenburg Wave Ltd. VAN 0003, 1997. Theodorakis, Mikis. Symphony No.7. "Spring Symphony." Each of these recordings celebrates a live performance. The Xenakis was presented as a concert on the composer's 75th. Birthday, 29 May 1997, at Cooper Union, Great Hall, and recorded the following day at St. Peter's Church in Chelsea, New York City. The Theodorakis is a live recording of the premier concert at the Schauspielhaus in Berlin, 2 December 1987, but not issued on CD until 1994. The Xenakis is the second volume in a project by the New York group, ST-X Ensemble Xenakis USA, which has been formed expressly to record the complete works of Xenakis. The Theodorakis is part of a series of recordings of his large-scale works by mainly German orchestras, issued on Intuition Records. Xenakis is 75 years old, Theodorakis 73. Greek music for the last fifty years has been dominated by these two astonishing personalities. But two musical imaginations could scarcely be more unlikeas if not only not sharing the same country nor culture, but seemingly not sharing even the same century nor universe. Even so, their careers have crossed time and time again, each giving support and succor to the other especially in face of political opposition and censorship.

Brăila, Romania. Xenakis studied civil engineering in Athens (1940–47) and worked as an architect in Paris (1947–59) with Le Corbusier . He was also a composition pupil of Arthur Honegger , Darius Milhaud , and Olivier Messiaen . Xenakis used both Greek folk elements and twelve-tone technique in his music. He also developed a probabilistic technique of composition, based on the mathematical probability of the recurrence of notes and rhythms. His works include Métastasis (1953–54) for orchestra, Pithoprakta (1957) for strings, and Achorripsis (1958) for 21 instruments. In 1958, Xenakis collaborated with Edgar Varèse on the Poème Electronique. His later compositions often include electronic sound, as in Bohor (1962) and Polytope de Cluny (1972), or virtuoso percussion, as in Psappha Rebonds (1988), and his last piece
