It focused on maximizing the crop yield while maintaining a good soil ecosystem . Throughout the 20th century the discipline expanded and the current scope of the discipline is much broader. Agricultural economics today includes a variety of applied areas, having considerable overlap with conventional economics.

Economics is the study of resource allocation under scarcity. Agronomics, or the application of economic methods to optimizing the decisions made by agricultural producers, grew to prominence around the turn of the 20th century. The field of agricultural economics can be traced out to works on land economics. Henry Charles Taylor was the greatest contributor with the establishment of the Department of Agricultural Economics at Wisconsin in 1909 Another contributor

    Agricultural Economics
Agricultural economics combines the technical aspects of agriculture with the business aspects of management, marketing and finance. Students are prepared for a wide variety of exciting careers in the marketing of commodities sold and inputs purchased by agricultural producers; agricultural finance; and management of agribusinesses, farms and ranches. In addition, many graduates pursue successful careers in government service, economic development, commodity promotion and agricultural policy analysis.
    The Program
The agricultural economics program emphasizes decision making, technical expertise and communication with a focus on agriculture and the food industry. Students are trained to be decision makers through course work and practical experience in agriculture, analytical and communication skills, team building, economic theory and agricultural policy.
The Department of Agribusiness and Applied Economics also offers majors in agribusiness and in economics and offers a minor in agribusiness and economics.

    Agricultural Economics
Food crises, commodity price booms and busts, environmental concerns and trade tensions are just some of the focuses of the analysis undertaken in agricultural economics. Agricultural economics concerns itself with the study of the production and consumption of food in both developed and developing countries along with analysis of the policies that shape the world's largest industry. Professor Wyn Morgan , University of Nottingham Agricultural economics is a branch of applied economics that takes the tools of both micro and macroeconomics and uses them to solve problems in a specific area. With food inflation soaring and agricultural disputes at the heart of the collapse of the latest round of world trade talks, the subject has seldom been so topical. At the micro level, we need to understand the relevant production functions and the relationship between labour and capital. When is it worthwhile to employ labour-saving, ‘lumpy' capital? And most courses will also look at the by-products (externalities) of some types of agricultural production, such as the effect of increased nitrogen fertiliser use. Photo by publienergy on Flickr Equally, we can use consumer theory to understand how shoppers make choices about the food they buy (including diets and fads). Many courses will also look at the food sector more generally, and ask whether there is excessive market power in the hands of supermarkets.

The American Journal of Agricultural Economics
The American Journal of Agricultural Economics provides a forum for creative and scholarly work on the economics of agriculture and food, natural resources and the environment, and rural and community development throughout the world. Papers should relate to one of these areas, should have a problem orientation, and should demonstrate originality and innovation in analysis, methods, or application. Analyses of problems pertinent to research, extension, and teaching are equally encouraged, as is interdisciplinary research with a significant economic component. Review articles that offer a comprehensive and insightful survey of a relevant subject, consistent with the scope of the Journal as discussed above, will also be considered. All articles published, regardless of their nature, will be held to the same set of scholarly standards. AJAE (ISSN 0002-9092) will be published in January, March (two issues), August, and October in 2010 and is printed by Oxford University Press.
