  • Environmental Aspect – an element of an organization's activities, products and services that can interact with the environment (adopted from the ISO 14001 standard) Environmental Impact – any change to the environment, whether adverse or beneficial, wholly or partially resulting from an organization's activities, products or services (adopted from the ISO 14001 standard) Significant Environmental Aspect - an environmental aspect that has or can have a significant environmental impact (adopted from the ISO 14001 standard)
Procedure 1. Identification of Activities, Products and Services 1.1 The Cross-Functional Team identifies the organization's current and past activities, products and services to establish a general framework for the identification and evaluation of environmental aspects and associated impacts. ENVIRONMENTAL ASPECTS
The page provides a brief discussion around the identification of environmental aspects. The identification of environmental aspects follows the identification of environmental risk sources and their emissions and discharges and should provide a comprehensive list (or register) of all potential environmental impacts from which to select aspects that need to be managed. This is a crucial step in the environmental management process. The international environmental management standard ISO-14001 provides a definition of environmental aspect, but which is not very clear: i.e.: . It is not very clear because an element I have seen quite a few aspect registers. Some of these only list emissions and discharges, while others list interactions between risk sources and environmental sensitivities, but most have a mixture of the possible interpretations of . It also proves a challenge to limit the number of environmental aspects. Especially when listing interactions between environmental sensitivities and emissions and discharges, the number of environmental aspects can easily become unmanageable. As a consequence, environmental impact registers tend to suffer in transparency and succinctness. I believe that the ISO-14001 definition of environmental aspect is deliberately vague; in recognition of the fact that environmental management is so subjective. I also suggest embracing this subjectivity rather than fighting it, and to consider the expectations of stakeholders at this stage of the process as suggested in the following Figure.

Environmental Aspects of the African Great Lakes Region
The African Great Lakes region is composed of a variety of ecosystems with significant biodiversity. Click on the map to take a closer look at the area. The region's relief is moderate and influenced by tectonic and volcanic activity. The highlands are relatively cool with abundant rainfall. Major drainage basins include those of the Congo-Zaire, Nile and Zambezi rivers which drain into the Atlantic Ocean, Mediterranean Sea and Indian Ocean, respectively. Forests are also dominant in the lowlands of the Congo-Zaire Basin, while grasslands and savannahs are most common in the southern and eastern highlands. The climate and rich volcanic soils in the highlands sustain intensely cultivated croplands, encouraging the growth of human population. This increased population is competing for habitat used by many endangered species, including the mountain gorilla and the forest elephant. Governments in the region are attempting to lessen the impact through integrated conservation and development projects. Region 5 EMS At the heart of any EMS are Environmental Aspects and Impacts, which can be thought of as the cause and effect of what we do and how it affects the environment. A company or facility can identify its aspects and their environmental impacts by examining the inputs and outputs to its operations. For example, in the Regional Office we use electricity (an input) for ventilation and air conditioning (an activity). Most electricity is produced by the burning of coal which produces air emissions that reduce air quality and cyreate acid and nitrogen deposition that degrade water quality (outputs). By reducing our use of electricity we can reduce the effect producing this electricity has on the environment. The definition of an Environmental Aspect is any element of an organization's activities, products and services that can interact with the environment.

Hello Friends! I would like to thank you for visiting the Green-Haus website. In 1996, I incorporated Green-Haus with the intent of selling green building products online. Since I shortly thereafter decided that the online market was only looking for paint and water filters at that time, I then shifted my focus towards providing Sustainable Design Research and Consulting services. My goal is to further investigate and question the priniciples of Sustainable Design and educate everyone I can along the way. I grew up living in Louisiana most of my life and received my B.S. in Civil Engineering from Tulane University in New Orleans. Living in Louisiana gave me the opportunity to see oil refineries and petrochemical plants in person and be able to witness firsthand their negative effect on the environment and our economic society. While at Tulane, I had a very innovative teacher, the late Bill Mouton, who I could never thank enough for sparking my interest in innovative building techniques. I also have to thank my family who are architects, engineers and artists, as they encouraged me since the young age of 5 to draw floor plans. You may have noticed that I am completely changing the format of this website.

Environmental Aspects

When fossil fuels are burned in the production of electricity, a variety of gases and particulates are formed. If these gases and particulates are not captured by some pollution control equipment, they are released into the atmosphere. This section provides a brief summary of the gaseous emissions from U.S. electric utilities and the methods employed to reduce or eliminate their release into the atmosphere. Among the gases emitted during the burning of fossil fuels are sulfur dioxide (SO ), nitrogen oxides (NO x ), and carbon dioxide (CO Coal-fired generating units produce more SO and NO x than other fossil-fuel units for two reasons. First, because coal generally contains more sulfur than other fossil fuels, it creates more SO when burned. Second, there are more emissions from coal-fired plants because more coal-fired capacity is used compared with other fossil-fueled capacity.
Sulfur is an element that is present in almost all coal, although some kinds of coal contain more sulfur than others depending on the geographic location of the coal mine and the type of coal being mined. Western coal has less sulfur than eastern coal. More than one-half of the coal mined in the West is subbituminous coal that is low in sulfur content (about 0.5 percent) and contains approximately 9,000 Btu per pound. Bituminous eastern coal can exceed both a 5-percent sulfur content and a heat content of 12,000 Btu per pound. The average percent of sulfur contained in coal ranges from 0.3 percent in the West to approximately 2.5 percent in the East. During combustion, the sulfur combines with the oxygen in the air to form SO
