Soil Health In New York State 60.14% of the over seven million acres of available farmland is used for crop production and 35% of the agricultural product sales in the state are crops.  New York ranks second in the nation for corn silage production, but the top field crops also include hay, haylage, shelled corn and soybeans.  Small grains such as buckwheat and oats and speciality crops like sunflowers are also grown in the state.
Weather and pest-related damage to crops pose a real threat to production and, consequently, the financial stability of farmers.  Extension agricultural educators and Cornell faculty work together with the agricultural industry to provide farm owners with information on topics such as crop nutritional needs to maintain soil fertility, weed control with minimal use of herbicides and using sound environmental management practices while increasing profitability.

NEW! Strip Tillage Guide
Why the interest in soybeans?
Soybeans appear to be as profitable as wheat and corn when considering a 5-cent pound tax credit which is (at a 55 bu/a yield that is $165/acre) if grown in Oregon and processed to biodiesel in Oregon.
Soybeans on a farmer's field near Vale, OR. 2009.

2009 Idaho and Oregon Soybean Variety Trials To learn more about the tax credit, follow this link Where would I sell soybeans so they would end up getting the tax credit? One example is Willamette Biomass Processors. What kind of yield can I expect? We don't have a county-wide estimate of what farmers will get. All we have is experimental data from the Malheur Experiment Station. Experimental yields have averaged 63 bushels per acre with the best varieties receiving 67 bushels per acre. Reduce these yields since whole fields will average less. Other advantages of soybeans include:
  • Soybeans are easy to grow and will probably require no new machinery.

Markets - Field Crops
Cotton Peanuts Tobacco The field crops section of the Division of Marketing provides assistance and services to the grain, oilseeds, cotton, peanuts and tobacco industries. Responsibilities include analyzing government reports, advising producers on cash merchandising, and developing risk management educational programs. Financial risk management is a key component of profitability in agri-business. Education on the use of derivatives is offered in the following areas:
  • long and short futures hedging to manage position risk using options as insurance and asset substitution minimum and maximum contracts and synthetic hedging using short-term interest futures to manage credit line risk
Two of the government reports that are closely followed are the crop production and the world supply/demand, which are issued monthly. These reports forecast both U.S. and world production and the carryover stocks, which have a major influence on the volatility on the market.

    Field Crops
    Background
One area that offers opportunity for field crops is the emerging prospects for renewable fuels as part of the Green Energy sector. Both corn, for ethanol production, and soybeans, for bio-diesel production, would be in higher demand should plans for an ethanol plant and a bio-diesel production facility come to fruition. Those facilities will need a readily available, local source of these feedstocks for their operations.
However, in 2005, the state Legislature passed, and the Governor signed, a bill that would phase out MTBE by 2009, providing an increased need for ethanol production in the state.
In 2005 market opportunities links between organic growers and processors were developed, edible soybeans were investigated, progress toward the construction of an ethanol plant continued and a list of organic hay producers was created.
In 2006 efforts to support organic crop production, farm income diversification, the establishment of an ethanol plant, the prospect of commercially produced edible soybeans, and grower education about agri-tourism opportunities will be continued.
