Iowa State University
Some of you might have come looking for us. Others simply might have stumbled upon our site. Either way, we're glad you stopped by for a visit. But before you depart this page to learn more about our department, take just a moment to ponder the importance of horticulture in our daily lives. And maybe the best place to begin is with a definition. Horticulture is the science and art of producing and utilizing food crops (fruits and vegetables), turfgrass, nursery crops (trees, shrubs, annuals, and perennials), and greenhouse grown ornamental crops. Some people make horticulture their profession but practically everyone is positively affected on a daily basis by horticulture. So where does the Department of Horticulture at Iowa State fit into the picture? Well, the answers are found right here on our brand new web site. And we're as proud of it as we are our faculty, staff, and students. Once you've perused our site I think you'll agree, great things are happening here in Ames. But don't make this your only visit. In fact, we expect to see you on a regular basis. Enjoy!
New Greenhouses On Schedule
The Department of Horticulture Greenhouses have supported activities related to specific courses, research projects, extension demonstrations, and departmental functions with outdated, obsolete greenhouses that are virtually unchanged since they were constructed in 1913. Six greenhouses were constructed in 1980 and were used for research activities. Technology advances and greenhouse design has changed enough in the last 30 years to make them outdated also. The old greenhouse were managed, and utilized efficiently, maximizing opportunities to support the Horticulture Department activities even with the limited environmental and growing conditions.

Horticulture
Horticulture is small scale, low intensity farming. This subsistence pattern involves at least part time planting and tending of domesticated food plants. Pigs, chickens, or other relatively small domesticated animals are often raised for food and prestige. Many horticultural societies supplement their farming subsistence base with occasional hunting and gathering of wild plants and animals. Horticulturalist population densities are higher than those of most foragers and pastoralists. Usually, there are at least 1-10 people per square mile with community sizes ranging from around 30 to several hundred. In most cases, horticulture is more productive than foraging (with the exception of aquatic foraging). Some horticulturalists are not only subsistence farmers but also produce a small surplus to sell or exchange in local markets for things that they cannot produce themselves. Welcome
For over 100 years, the faculty, staff and students of the Department of Horticulture at the University of Wisconsin-Madison have been serving the University and State of Wisconsin. This department has a long tradition of excellence in horticultural research, instruction, extension and service. Our research and extension programs are recognized worldwide for their contributions to fundamental plant biology and applied horticulture production. The graduate program was recognized when it was ranked first in its discipline in the January 12th, 2007 issue of the Chronicle of Higher Education, based on the number of book and journal articles published by each program's faculty, as well as journal citation, awards, honors and grants received. It is clear that the mission of the department would not be achieved without the efforts of our support staff. These staff members run many of the administrative functions of the department, as well as travel the boundaries of the state and connect the work of the department to farmers, consumers, commercial horticulturalists, and the general public. They assist with teaching and outreach functions and in many cases serve as a crucial link for our programs in the state of Wisconsin.
