skip to main skip to sidebar MV BIOGRAPHIES Petits mots sur la vie et le travail de personnes de grand intérêt lundi 8 décembre 2008 ALEXANDER, John WHITE Alexander John White est né le 7 octobre 1856 à Allegheny en Pennsylvanie. À 19 ans à peine, il commence sa carrière comme caricaturiste et illustrateur politique pour le magazine Harper's Weekly en 1875. En 1877, il suivit une formation en art à Paris, puis à Munich à la Kunstakademie sous Gyuala Beczúr. En 1878, il rejoignit une communauté de peintres américains établie par Frank Duvenek à Polling en Bavière. Le groupe voyagea en Italie l'année suivante où Alexander John se lia d'amitié avec James McNeill Whistler et Henry James . Il revint à New York en 1881 pour travailler pour Harper's et pour Princeton en tant que professeur de dessin. Il devint un portraitiste à la mode de la haute société. En 1893, sa réputation s'était étendu aux États-Unis et en Europe. À partir de 1895, on lui commanda une série de murales pour la Bibliothèque du Congrès à Washington D.C., s'ensuivit de nombreuses commandes tant pour des murales que pour des portraits. Il mourut le 31 mai 1915 à New York. Le profil de ce visage pourrait être celui d'une de mes tantes dans sa jeune trentaine. Ma mère a vécu au sein d'une famille nombreuse jusqu'à son adolescence. Ce fut toujours pour moi un mystère curieux à imaginer: avoir six soeurs. J'en ai une seule et il est souvent difficile de transiger ensemble... Sur un nombre plus élevé, il devrait y avoir de plus grande chance de trouver une âme semblable, des affinités complémentaires et une douce connivence. La possibilité d'avoir un frère m'a semblé obsolète à partir du moment qu'il m'apparu clairement qu'en tant qu'aînée, j'en serais responsable. C'est pourquoi probablement, j'accueille une communauté matriarcale de chattes en compagnonnage depuis plus de vingt ans déjà... et notre meute se porte bien, merci!

In Munich he associated with the "Duveneck Boys" and met Henry James and James Abbott McNeill Whistler when the group summered in Venice. Duveneck was so pleased with Alexander that he allowed him to teach a few of his classes. Following travels from New Orleans to North Africa, Alexander found himself back in Europe; he established himself in Paris in 1890, at the beginning of his busiest decade. The painter and his wife entertained the following celebrities at their apartment: the naturalist author Octave Mirabeau, Rodin, Oscar Wilde, the Symbolist poet Mallarmé, André Gide, and Joseph Pennell. Alexander exhibited at the "new" Paris Salon, organized by the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, in 1893, which immediately allied him with the progressives. Two years later he became a full member of the Société and received a mural commission for the Library of Congress.

They travelled to Venice, where he profited by the advice of Whistler, and then he continued his studies in Florence, the Netherlands, and Paris. Alexander's original and highly individual art is based upon a very personal interpretation of humanity. He died in New York. -
