I have never seen many of the paintings and didn't really have a clue as to the motivation he put into his work. I would love to see some really close up images. Illustrations not good enough I'd seen, downloaded, and printed many of Alma-Tadema's works full page in color from the artrenewal web site. I though they were beautiful. The colors and quality were good and the resolution high, but I really wanted a bound copy containing some of his works and this was the one I chose.

Alma-Tadema, Lawrence PAINTER (THE NETHERLANDS) BORN 8 Jan 1836, Dronrijp - DIED 25 Jun 1912, Wiesbaden REAL NAME Alma-Tadema, Laurens GRAVE LOCATION London: St. Paul's Cathedral Educated at the Academy in Antwerp, where Louis de Taeye (1822-1890) and Henri Leys (1815-1869) were among his teachers. In 1863 he married Marie Pauline Gressin Dumoulin de Boisgirard and their honeymoon brought them to Florence, Rome, Napoli and Pompeï. He had painted Egyptian motives before, but now he dedicated himself to Roman themes, usually portraying semi nude women with erotic radiations. When the Belgian art dealer Ernst Gambert saw his work he commisioned no less than 44 paintings. When they were shown in England they immediately became popular. Tragedy struck and both his only son (in 1865) and his wife (in 1869) died. Alma-Tadema moved to London where his star was rising and there he married his young pupil Laura Epps. Alma Tadema enjoyed his succes and they lived extravagantly at Townshend House in Tichfield Terrace, Regent's Park. They had it redesigned to lool like a Pompeiian villa, but when a barge with gun powder exploded near the house on Regent's Canal it was partially destroyed and soon after its rebuilding they moved to a larger house in St. John's Wood that had formerly been occupied by his friend the painter Tissot, who had left England in 1882 after the death of his mistress Kathleen Newton. Alma Tadema was a friend of the future king Edward VII, to whom he dedicated a series of pornographic works. In his last few years his work became less popular and he resigned from the Royal Academy committee.

Lawrence Alma-Tadema Buy Posters at AllPosters.com Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema was one of the masters of Victorian painting. A fascination for classical and mythological subjects inspired incredibly exquisite renderings of marble, silk and precious metals reminescent of the ancient Roman Empire in its luxury and decadence. Lourens Tadema was born January 8, 1836, in the small village of Dronrijp, Friesland in the Northern Netherlands, the son of notary Pieter Jiltes Tadema and his wife Hinke. The boy received his godfather's name, Lourens Alma, later translated to Lawrence. The family moved to the nearby town of Leeuwarden in 1837, where they lived for three years until the death of Lourens’ father. Hinke was left to raise her five children alone. As a young child, Lourens displayed a talent for art and received his first art training with local drawing master Cornelius Wester. While his mother adopted art as a hobby, neither she nor his Godfather encouraged it as a career. Although a future in law had been already mapped out for him, his passion for art never wavered. He studied independently with art books that he purchased himself. At fifteen, Lawrence Alma-Tadema was diagnosed consumptive and was given only a short time to live. His mother and Godfather decided to allow him to devote whatever remaining time he had to study art. In 1852, feeling somewhat better, he entered The Royal Academy of Antwerp (the City of Rubens), where he studied early Dutch and Flemish art under a number of noted practitioners of the Romantic school. Due to his fascination with archeology, he began to incorporate this interest into the Ancient World to form a style all his own.
