lived his entire life in Paris and may never have left France. He was born in 1795 (a date revised in the 1990s from 1796 as a result of Martin Sonnabend's recalculation of the Revolutionary calendar). He is reported to have had minimal formal schooling even in reading, and to have acquired his extensive liberal-arts education on his own. His initial professional training was in metalwork: first with his father, a goldsmith from Lyons, then with a metal engraver in military equipment, and finally with Martin-Guillaume Biennais (active 1800-1832), then master goldsmith to Napoleon. After serving in the army from 1812 to 1814, Barye trained in the fine arts with sculptor François-Joseph Bosio (1768-1845) and painter Baron Gros (1771-1835). He then studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts from 1818 to 1823. His miniature medallion, Milo of Crotona Devoured by a Lion , won an honorable mention in metal engraving in 1819, but he failed to win the Prix de Rome. He worked as a craftsman for the goldsmith Jacques-Henri Fauconnier (1779-1839) from 1823 to 1831 and made his Salon debut in 1827 with a selection of busts.

Barye, Antoine Louis key , French animal sculptor. Son of a Parisian goldsmith, he followed his father's trade as a youth. In 1832 he exhibited at the Salon his Lion and Serpent (Tuileries), which won him recognition; but only late in life did he achieve fame and free himself from debt. His simple, romantic, and forceful studies of animals or groups of animals were often small and designed for commercial reproduction in bronze. They enjoyed an international popularity and are still highly prized. Well-known examples of his work are Tiger and Gavial, Jaguar and Hare, Theseus and the Minotaur (all: Louvre), and Centaur and Lapith (Tuileries). He is also represented in the Metropolitan Museum and in the Brooklyn Museum. See C. S. Smith, Barbizon Days (1902, repr. 1969); G. F. Barye gradually gained a reputation as a monumental sculptor with government commissions for images of wild animals in the 1830s, figure groups and portraits for the facade of the Louvre in the 1850s, and freestanding Napoleonic monuments in the 1860s. He first exhibited his bronzes at the Salons of 1827 and 1831, receiving a second prize for his Lion Devouring a Gavial Generally speaking, Barye was responsible for having improved the status of animal sculpture, a category famous since antiquity, and for demonstrating its suitability as a modern expressive form. He also gained special fame as an artist who, regardless of subject matter, could meld grandeur and artistic refinement with realism in both public monuments and in small-scale bronzes for the home at a wide range of prices that the

Antoine Barye was best known as a sculptor of animals. He started out as a goldsmith and studied sculpture under F.J. Bosio and A.J. Gros. In 1818 he entered the École des Beaux Arts. After he watched the wild animals at the Jardin des Plantes in 1823 he turned to drawing and then sculpting animals.
In 1831 his sculpture of a tiger devouring a crocodile was exhibited and many more animals followed. In 1847 his "Theseus and the Minotaur" was shown. Two large lions by his hand can still be seen at the gardens of the Tuileries in Paris.
It took a long time before he enjoyed fame with the public, but in 1854 he was appointed Professor of Drawings at the Museum of Natural History. In 1864 he made a statue of Napoleon I for the city of Ajaccio and in 1868 he became a memeber of the Academy of Fine Arts.

Antoine-Louis Barye was born in Paris on September 15, 1796, the son of a goldsmith who had recently moved from Lyon. The family was probably poor since it is said that Antoine-Louis did not get around to learning to read until he was twelve years old. He had no formal schooling and was completely self-taught, relying entirely on his own reading, prodigious memory and acute powers of observations.
Barye's lifelong intimacy with metal began at the age of thirteen when he was apprenticed to a die-maker called Fourrier who produced military decorations. Here he remained for four years and it was during this time that he developed an interest in the art of medal engraving which eventually led him to sculpture.
His career was interrupted for two years in 1812 when he was drafted into the army at the age of 16. He was attached to an engineer's corps and engaged in topographical modelling, sculpting 'reliefs' for the forthcoming battles. After his release from the army Barye entered the studio of the academic sculptor Bosio. Bosio was a purist for convention and this straight jacket of regimented style left Barye infatuated with the natural, with frankness and with truth....... The contemporary critic, Gustave Plant, suggests 'It is to the timid uncertain method of Bosio that we owe the boldness seen in all of Barye's work'.
Without leaving Bosio, Barye entered the studio of the great artist the Baron Goss, here he found inspiration from the exciting canvasses depicting tumultuous battle scenes - rearing horses with flowing manes, riders with plumes billowing - the romantic conception which Barye was later to capture so magnificently in his sculpture.

At this time the sculptural groups of wild and struggling animals became cult objects. This can be seen in particular in the vigorous school of 'animalier' sculptors that developed at this time, the most important member of which was Antoine-Louis Barye.

Barye, Antoine-Louis
(b . Sept. 24, 1796, Paris, Fr.d. June 29, 1875, Paris), prolific French sculptor, primarily of animals, known as the father of the Animalier school. Barye's talent for rendering dynamic tension and exact anatomical detail is especially evident in his most famous bronzes, those of wild animals struggling with or devouring their prey. He also produced many figures and groups of domestic animals. Barye moved in and out of the dominant artistic circle during his turbulent career. He exhibited his bronzes at the Salons of 1827 and 1831, receiving a second prize for his "Lion Devouring a Gavial." In 1834 he began to have conflicts with the academic art establishment and did not exhibit again until 1850.
