Great Book. This is a great book, lots of pictures of his work. The only problem is that it got here damaged (some of the pages we ripped :( ). Collection of pieces with interviews and retrospective essays This collection of works by Jean-Michel Basquiat was prepared for an exhibition of the painter's works at the Museo Revoltella in Trieste in 1999. The paintings are presented in a nicely large size, better than the paperback Basquiat books that are easier to find, and the colours are vivid. In addition to the works, the book also contains a great deal of textual material, presented in English and Italian translation. Retrospective essays are provided by Keith Haring, Francisco Clemente, and Keith Haring, and Basquiat's major supporter Bruno Bischofberger contributes a fascinating reflection on the painter's collaborations with Clemente and Warhol. There are also four interviews that allow Basquiat to speak in his own words.

Jean-Michel Basquiat (born 1960 in Brooklyn, New York, died 1988 in New York from an overdose of heroine) emerged from the New York punk and graffiti scene in the late 1970s. He rose to the public’s attention with his graffities which, together with his companion Al Diaz, he signed anonymously under the pseudonym SAMO. The Times Square Show, an event held at the beginning of the 1980s which included spray paintings and brushworks by “SAMO” introduced Basquiat to the public. An article about Basquiat in the ArtForum magazine entitled “The Radiant Child” (1981) was the beginning of a career in the fine arts scene and away from graffiti. Here the child of Haitian and Puerto Rican parents met established and distinguished artists like Andy Warhol, with whom he was to collaborate, or Julian Schnabel. Basquiat himself became a shooting star of the vivid and varied 1980s art scene. His spontaneous, colorful, and expressive paintings are special due to their combination of the artist’s own primitive figurative language, which included archaic figures, faces and calligraphic elements, primarily clear colors, written words and statements meant to be deciphered by the beholder and his imaginative perception. Tobacco Versus Red Chief in The UBS Art Collection is one of the early paintings by Jean-Michel Basquiat and includes typical elements of his formal language. It shows an American Indian chief with his arm raised in the traditional Indian gesture of greeting that we have become familiar with through mass media. He is holding three cigars in his hand which he is staring at. It appears that he has got these in exchange for his land whilst being imprisoned by barbed wire drawn around the picture. In the background are two tents and one with simple outlines in the foreground. This one is connected to the handwritten letters “hotel”. The painting appears nice and pleasant with its primitive manner of depicting the “Red Chief” and at the same time it is of obviously a critical comment on American history and the American’s treatment of the Indians and other minorities.

Jean-Michel Basquiat
American Painter
Every line means something. Jean-Michel Basquiat was born on December 22, 1960 in Brooklyn, New York. His father, Gerard Basquiat was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti and his mother, Matilde was born in Brooklyn of Puerto Rican parents.
Jean-Michel Basquiat's productive career spanned just one short decade, yet he is considered one of the best-known artists of his generation and one of only a small number of Hispanic-African-American artists to have achieved international recognition. Graduating from subway walls to canvas and from the streets of New York to the galleries of SoHo, the artist and his work will forever remain a mystery to those who seek explanation.
Jean-Michel's early years were spent with his middle class Haitian father, Gerard, who was unable to fulfill his son's need for nurturing and recognition. To fill the void, Jean-Michel hit the streets of New York at a young age where art became an outlet for his anger and empty childhood. Also known by the tag "SAMO," Jean-Michel's unique brand of graffiti was found throughout Manhattan as early as 1976. "His work from the first consisted of conceptual, enigmatic combinations of words and symbols, executed with the curt simplicity of a late Roman inscription", according to Henry Geldzahler, longtime curator of twentieth-century art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Jean-Michel was 18 when he approached Geldzahler and Andy Warhol in a SoHo restaurant. He sold Andy a postcard for one dollar but was dismissed by Geldzahler as "too young." Less than three years later (1981) he was invited by artist and filmmaker, Diego Cortez, to participate in the P.S. 1 show, (Institute for Art and Urban Resources), alongside more than twenty artists including Keith Haring, Robert Mapplethorpe, Kenny Sharf and Andy Warhol.
