Giovanni Bellini was an Italian Renaissance painter, probably the best known of the Bellini family of Venetian painters. His father was Jacopo Bellini , his brother was Gentile Bellini , and his brother-in-law was Andrea Mantegna . He is considered to have revolutionized Venetian painting, moving it towards a more sensuous and coloristic style. Through the use of clear, slow-drying oil paints, Giovanni created deep, rich tints and detailed shadings. His sumptuous coloring and fluent, atmospheric landscapes had a great effect on the Venetian painting school, especially on his pupils Giorgione and Titian Naked Young Woman in Front of the Mirror: 1515 'Naked Young Woman in Front of the Mirror', Bellini's first female nude, painted when he was about 85 years old. The painting is signed and dated: " Joannes Bellinus / faciebat M.D.X.V." We witness in this late canvas the incredible openness that the almost ninety year-old artist succeeded in advancing in his affirmation of a new profane sensibility. Giovanni Bellini was probably born in Venice. He was brought up in his father's house, and always lived and worked in the closest fraternal relation with his brother Gentile. Up until the age of nearly thirty we find in his work a depth of religious feeling and human pathos which is his own. His paintings from the early period are all executed in the old tempera method; the scene is softened by a new and beautiful effect of romantic sunrise color (see for example, the Saint Jerome).

    Giovanni Bellini
[Regions of Italy] "T he most modern of the ancients and the most ancient of the moderns" I n Venice, most visitors concentrate on their three "T"s: Titian, Tintoretto and Tiepolo. But there is another great artist who is sometimes overlooked, even though he is officially considered the founder of the Venetian school of painting.
P artly because he lived so long (circa 1430-1516), Giovanni Bellini was in many ways the protagonist of a profound change in Venetian art. When he was born, the Republic was in the throes of grafting a late Gothic style onto the city's existing layer of Byzantine splendor. Giovanni spent his childhood working as an apprentice in the very successful workshop of his father Jacopo, during the years when the decoration of St. Mark's Basilica was in full swing. T hen, in 1453, his elder sister married Andrea Mantegna, one of the most advanced students of perspective in all of northern Italy. Giovanni was deeply impressed by his brother-in-law's evolutionary work, just as he was later amazed by the ability of Piero della Francesca and Antonello da Messina to place groups of people within complex three-dimensional settings, something that had been virtually unknown just a few years before. A mong Venetian artists, Bellini led the way in fostering the style of "tonalism," which gave less importance to design and graphics while highlighting the tones of light and color. By the time Titian was starting his career, the elderly Bellini was breaking new ground again by adding mythological and allegorical scenes to the religious ones that had dominated the art of the fifteenth century. Never one to consider his career complete, he painted his first female nude at the age of 85!

    The Mythological Subject
The ribald theme comes from The Feasts (Fasti) The beautiful nymph Lotis, shown reclining at the far right, was lulled to sleep by wine. Priapus, overcome by lust, seized the opportunity to take advantage of her and is portrayed bending forward to lift her skirt. His attempt was foiled when an ass, seen at the left, "with raucous braying, gave out an ill-timed roar. Awakened, the startled nymph pushed Priapus away, and the god was laughed at by all." Priapus, his pride wounded, took revenge by demanding the annual sacrifice of a donkey. The ass stands next to Silenus, a woodland deity who used the beast to carry firewood. Silenus wears a keg on his belt because he was a follower of Bacchus, god of wine. Bacchus himself, seen as an infant, kneels before them while decanting wine into a crystal pitcher. Reading from left to right, the principal figures are:

    Bellini, Giovanni
    (b. c. 1430, Venice [Italy]d. 1516, Venice), Italian painter who made Venice a centre of Renaissance art comparable to Florence and Rome. Although the paintings for the hall of the Great Council in Venice, considered his greatest works, were destroyed by fire in 1577, a large number of altarpieces (such as that in the church of SS. Giovanni e Paolo, Venice) and other extant works show a steady but adventurous evolution from purely religious, narrative emphasis to a new naturalism of setting and landscape. Little is known about Bellini's family. His father, Jacopo , a painter, was a pupil of Gentile da Fabriano, one of the leading painters of the 15th-century Gothic revival, and may have followed him to Florence. In any case, Jacopo introduced the principles of the Florentine Renaissance to Venice before either of his sons. Apart from his sons Gentile and Giovanni, he had at least one daughter, Niccolosa, who married the painter Andrea Mantegna in 1453. Both sons probably began as assistants in their father's workshop.
