Salem, Massachusetts has never been known as an art community, but it can lay claim to a man who was called "the most medalled painter in America" by the Boston Transcript in 1914: Frank Weston Benson.
The Museum School class c 1882.
Frank Benson, in straw hat, is second from right
Courtesy of the Peabody Essex Museum Benson was born in Salem in 1862, and raised at what is now 46 Washington Square . His father George, an important cotton merchant, encouraged all of his children to participate in the smorgasbord of cultural activities that Salem had to offer in the late nineteenth century from Lyceum lectures to dance classes at Hamilton Hall , but drew the line when young Frank decided he wanted to pursue a career in art. His mother, a watercolorist, intervened, and Benson enrolled at the new Museum School in Boston in the fall of 1880.
At the Museum School Frank received a classical art foundation under the tutelage of Otto Grunderson and Frank Crowninshield. Frank then spent two years at the legendary Academie Julien in Paris. Here daily trips to the Louvre to copy masterpieces were supplemented with life drawing sessions and critiques by established masters. Benson returned to Salem in 1885 and went on to teach for two years at the Portland (ME) School of Art. By 1888 he was back in Salem and married to Ellie Peirson. The following year he and Edward Tarbell were hired to teach at their alma mater, the Boston Museum School. Benson, an extremely popular teacher, would hold this position until 1912 and would remain involved with the school until 1930.

Benson was one of the first American artists to combine the figure with the Impressionist landscape. His images of women and children in sunlit meadows and hillsides established Impressionism as a major style of painting in America. These works are among the most beloved American Impressionist canvases today. Benson is also known for his indoor figural depictions which convey the quiet contemplative spirit of the genteel age and for paintings, etchings, and watercolors of sporting subjects, especially of fishing and hunting, which he rendered in the later portion of his career. Benson’s fame and financial success lasted throughout his professional life. He was one of the most popular artists of his era, and today his paintings are widely reproduced and considered among the most beautiful works in American public and private collections.

Frank Weston Benson
Frank Weston Benson was an American Impressionist artist, and a member of the Ten American Painters. Benson was born in Salem, Massachusetts. In 1879, he began study at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston under Otto Grundmann, and later at the Académie Julian in Paris. Upon return to America, he would become an instructor at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Some of his best known paintings depict his daughters outdoors at Benson's summer home on the island of North Haven, Maine. He also produced numerous paintings and etchings of wildfowl. Born into a successful merchant family, Benson lived in Salem for most of his life. His brother was the architect and painter John Prentiss Benson. At the Boston Museum school he befriended Edmund Charles Tarbell and Robert Reid, at the same time teaching drawing classes in Salem and painting landscapes during the summer. In 1883 he began his studies in Paris, and in the summer of 1884 painted at Concarneau, along with Willard Metcalf and Edward Simmons.

Through his paintings, teaching, and involvement in professional artists' organizations, Frank Weston Benson was one of the leaders in the development of an American Impressionist style. In the 1940s, late in his life, he would look back on a long and varied career that included landscapes, still lifes, sporting subjects, and birds, painted in oil and watercolor and etched on copper plates. But Benson is best-remembered for his figurative paintings, most of which he had completed by 1920. His images of young ladies in white dresses standing contemplatively on windswept hillsides gave ineradicable definition to one aspect of American Impressionism. And, with the closely-related works of his friend, Edmund C. Tarbell, his portrayals of the same women reading or sewing in elegantly appointed interiors shaped the central motif of what came to be identified as a distinctively Bostonian tradition.
Born in Salem, Massachusetts, to a prosperous mercantile family, Benson overcame his father's early skepticism about his choice of an artistic career to study, first, at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and then at the Acad6mie Julian in Paris, which for many young American artists of the era had become a mandatory stop on the road to artistic respectability. After returning to New England in 1885, over the next four years Benson opened a Boston studio which he shared with Tarbell, began teaching at the Museum School, and was elected to membership in the Society of American Artists, the progressive alternative to the National Academy of Design. In 1898, Benson further distanced himself from the academic establishment by helping found the( Ten American Artists, an organization dedicated to the exhibition and promotion of Impressionism.

Turn On the Glittering Light of Impressionism: The Art of Frank Benson
By Charles Sovek
The Artist's Magazine - October, 1989 How Frank Benson created sparkling color without sacrificing solid form. Impressionist Frank Benson brought a fresh breeze of sparkling light and color to Boston's conservative exhibition halls and, along with his fellow artists, changed the course of American painting. Now, nearly a century after his sun-splashed canvases were first shown, the work of this talented American painter still evokes the admiration of art students and public alike. His depictions of rosy-cheeked young women, children on holiday, duck hunters prowling the Massachusetts wetlands and fishermen wading through sun-dappled streams capture not only the nostalgia of a bygone era but also a quality of light and color that's unmistakably Benson's. An Ideal Light Calm Morning (44x36) right, is a superb example of how Benson captured a singular lighting effect and overcame the rapid movement of the sun and ever-changing fluctuations of current and tide. Aside from the warm light on the figures and boat, the piece is comprised of predominantly cool colors, and values are simplified The figures, for example, are made up of no more than three or four modeling values while the background boats are indicated with a mere two, poster-like tones. Two or three sessions were probably all Benson needed to capture this idyllic outing. Single Light - Benson made the center of interest clear by using a spotlit effect - reducing the figures and boat to a single, overall shape of light. In the completed painting (above), you can see how this helps play down the various background elements and forces the focal point to predominate.

Peabody Essex Museum Salem, MA http://www.pem.org Light Shines on Frank W. Benson: American Impressionist H e was one of the last great American Impressionists and among the most celebrated painters of his day. In all his work, Frank W. Benson brilliantly captured the effects of light on the physical world. Benson's virtuosity with light in all its manifestations will be the focus of a major exhibition opening at the Peabody Essex Museum September 29, 2000. Frank W. Benson: American Impressionist will showcase the breadth and depth of this important American painter. The exhibition is sponsored by Sovereign Bank New England and runs through February 18, 2001. "An exhibition like this one is long overdue," says Faith Andrews Bedford , Benson's great-granddaughter and biographer, and co-curator for this exhibition. "Benson's use of light was so superb in all media and motifs." Benson (1862-1951) came from a prosperous Salem, Massachusetts family and was later trained at the Academie Julian in Paris. Deeply influenced by seventeenth-century masters such as Vermeer and Velazquez, he became a leader of an important group of painters known as the Boston School. Benson and fellow Boston School artists like Edmund C. Tarbell
