He was the leading sculptor of his age and also a prominent architect. In addition he painted, wrote plays, and designed metalwork and stage sets. A student of Classical sculpture , Bernini possessed the unique ability to capture, in marble , the essence of a narrative moment with a dramatic naturalistic realism which was almost shocking. This ensured that he effectively became the successor of Michelangelo , far outshining other sculptors of his generation, including his rival, Alessandro Algardi . His talent extended beyond the confines of his sculpture to consideration of the setting in which it would be situated; his ability to be able to synthesise sculpture, painting and architecture into a coherent conceptual and visual whole has been termed by the art historian, Irving Lavin, the ‘unity of the visual arts’.

    Bernini, Giovanni Lorenzo or Gianlorenzo
Bernini, Giovanni Lorenzo or Gianlorenzo key baroque David Rape of Proserpine (1622), and Apollo and Daphne (1625), were done for Scipione Cardinal Borghese, one of the most important patrons of the period. These are all in the Borghese Gallery, Rome. Popes Urban VIII, Innocent X, and Alexander VII gave him unparalleled opportunities to design churches, chapels, fountains, monuments, tombs, and statues. In 1629, Bernini was appointed architect of St. Peter's. He designed the ornate baldachin under the dome, the Cathedra Petri (the monument enshrining St. Peter's chair), and the exuberant marble decorations of the chapels and nave. During the 1640s he designed the Cornaro Chapel as well as that of Santa Maria della Vittoria. From 1656 onward he worked on the great elliptical piazza and the vast, embracing arms of the colonnades in front of the church. Much of Bernini's sculpture combines white and colored marbles with bronze and stucco, most effectively used in Santa Maria della Vittoria, Rome, where he represented the

He was an exceptional portrait artist and owes to his father his accomplished techniques in the handling of marble and also an impressive list of patrons that included the Borghese and the Barbarini families. Bernini originally worked in the Late Mannerist tradition but rejected the contrived tendencies of this style. By 1624 he had adopted an expression that was passionate and full of emotional and psychological energy. His figures are caught in a transient moment from a single viewpoint, bursting into the spectator's space. In 1644 such interpretation reaches maturity in his rendition of the vision and Ecstasy of Saint Teresa . The Spanish nun swoons in heavenly rapture at the point of an angel's arrow. The work is a prime example of Bernini's vision of a decorative whole combining different materials and colours within an architectural space. A succession of powerful patrons in Rome and in Paris assured his reputation as an entrepreneurial artist who captured the spirit of the Counter-Reformation. His extreme and intense characterizations have fallen in and out of favor but his Baroque legacy remains intact."

Z Gian Lorenzo Bernini Biography Gian Lorenzo Bernini (Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini) (December 7, 1598 - November 28, 1680), who worked chiefly in Rome, was the pre-eminent baroque artist. Eminent as a sculptor and architect, he was also a painter, draftsman, designer of stage sets, fireworks displays, and funeral trappings.
Bernini was born in Naples and accompanied his father Pietro Bernini, a well known Mannerist sculptor himself, to Rome. His first works were inspired by Hellenistic sculpture that had been brought to Rome in imperial times. Among these early works are "The Goat Amalthea Nursing the Infant Zeus and a Young Satyr" (redated 1609, Galleria Borghese, Rome) and several allegorical busts such as the Damned Soul and Blessed Soul (ca 1619, Palazzo di Spagna, Rome). In the 1620s he came to maturity with the bust of Pope Paul V (1620), the "Abduction of Proserpina" (1621-1622, Galleria Borghese, Rome), the David (1623 - 24, illustration below left), and Apollo and Daphne (1624-25).
His first architectural project was the magnificent baldachin (1624 - 1633), the canopy over the high altar of St. Peter's Basilica [1] (http://www.kfki.hu/~arthp/art/b/bernini/gianlore/sculptur/1620/baldacch.jpg), and the façade for the church of Santa Bibiana (1624-1626), Rome. In 1629, before the Baldacchino was complete, Urban VIII put him in charge of all the ongoing architectural works at St Peter's. He was given the commission for the Basilica's tombs of Pope Urban VIII (1628-1647 [2] (http://www.thais.it/scultura/image/sch00348.htm) and, years later, Pope Alexander VII Chigi 1671-1678 [3] (http://www.kfki.hu/~arthp/art/b/bernini/gianlore/sculptur/1670/alex.jpg). The Chair of Saint Peter (Cathedra Petri) 1657-1666), in the apse of St. Peter's [4] (http://www.kfki.hu/~arthp/art/b/bernini/gianlore/sculptur/1650/throne.jpg), is one of his masterpieces.

Edward J. Sullivan The single most important artistic talent of the Italian baroque. Although most significant as a sculptor, he was also highly gifted as an architect; painter; draftsman; designer of stage sets, fireworks displays, and funeral trappings; and playwright. His art is the quintessence of high baroque energy and robustness ( see Baroque Art and Architecture). His ability to suggest textures of skin or cloth as well as to capture emotion and movement in sculpture was uncanny. Bernini reformed a number of sculptural genres, including the portrait bust, the fountain, and the tomb. His influence was widespread throughout the 17th and 18th centuries and was felt by such European masters as Pierre Puget, Pietro Bracci, and Andreas Schlüter. Bernini's life was dominated by his work, and his biography can be traced through the immense number of projects he undertook. His career developed almost entirely in Rome, although he was born in Naples. His father, Pietro Bernini, a talented sculptor of the late Mannerist style, was his son's first teacher (
