BERNINI, Gian Lorenzo (b. 1598, Napoli, d. 1680, Roma) Biography Italian artist who was perhaps the greatest sculptor of the 17th century and an outstanding architect as well. Bernini created the Baroque style of sculpture and developed it to such an extent that other artists are of only minor importance in a discussion of that style. Early years Bernini's career began under his father, Pietro Bernini, a Florentine sculptor of some talent who ultimately moved to Rome. The young prodigy worked so diligently that he earned the praise of the painter Annibale Carracci and the patronage of Pope Paul V and soon established himself as a wholly independent sculptor. He was strongly influenced by his close study of the antique Greek and Roman marbles in the Vatican, and he also had an intimate knowledge of High Renaissance painting of the early 16th century. His study of Michelangelo is revealed in the St Sebastian (c. 1617), carved for Cardinal Maffeo Barberini, who was later Pope Urban VIII and Bernini's greatest patron. Bernini's early works attracted the attention of Cardinal Scipione Borghese, a member of the reigning papal family. GO Colours and Life's Home About sitemap Bernini, Gianlorenzo (1598–1680) Architectural History Gianlorenzo Bernini was born in Naples in 1598. His father was a Florentine sculptor, and from an early age he showed creative talent. It was in Rome that Bernini lived, and completed most of his architectural and sculptural projects, until his death in 1680. His buildings represent the fluid and expressive qualities of the Baroque while revealing his interest in sculpture and theatrical design. Throughout his career, he received numerous projects for the Church, beginning with a commission for Cardinal Scipione Borghese. Although Bernini’s beginnings were distinctly classical, the Baldachin for St. Peter’s and his later churches such as St. Andrea al Quirinale describe the movement effects of the baroque. The elliptical piazza in front of St. Peter’s is one of his most celebrated projects. The use of preparatory drawings and sketches were typical of Bernini’s design process (Wittkower, 1997). He employed preliminary sketches for creative inspiration. He did not believe in overworking a sketch, but instead moved to an empty space on the page to try out new thoughts. They became increasingly precise as he arrived at a solution; as they remained in the realm of exploration, of conceptual beginnings (Lavin, 1981). This page of sketches is distinctive of Bernini’s style and process. The Fountain of Four Rivers in Piazza Navona in Rome is well known and one that has been discussed by historians Rudolf Wittkower and Irving Lavin. This sketch displays an important relationship between the architect/experienced sculptor who was concerned with the assembly of the stone blocks for carving, and the artist who was compelled to capture form on the surface of stone.

Donatello's came first, then Verrocchio's, followed by Michelangelo's, and finally that of Bernini. The four sculptors had completely different objectives. Only Bernini appears to have been specifically interested in a believable depiction of the slaying of Goliath by the youthful David. Of the four statues, certainly Bernini's is the most dramatic, the most realistic portrayal of the biblical hero. That was the objective which Bernini wished to achieve. It was really not the objective of the other three sculptors. Bernini conceived and carved his statue of David in seven months, a remarkable achievement in itself.
