Bonheur, Rosa (1822-1899) page: The most popular artist of nineteenth-century France, Rosa Bonheur was also one of the first renowned painters of animals and the first woman awarded the Grand Cross by the French Legion of Honor. A professional artist with a successful career, Bonheur lived in two consecutive committed relationships with women. Born on March 16, 1822 in Bordeaux, Marie Rosalie Bonheur was the oldest of the four children of Raimond Oscar Bonheur (1796-1849) and Sophie Marquis. Bonheur's father was an art teacher who came from a poor family, while her mother, a musician, had descended from a middle-class family and had been her husband's art student. Sponsor Message.

Wildlife Art by artist :- Bonheur, Rosa (Mar 1822 - May 1899)
Bonheur, Rosa
The most famous female artist of the 19thC, Rosa Bonheur, was born to a family of well-known artists in Bordeaux. Her most famous art was of country scenes but she did paint wildlife art as well as many paintings which include domestic animals (horses, sheep etc.) in rural scenes. Due to her difficult in learning to read, her mother encouraged her to draw an animal for each letter of the alphabet, which was her initial step in wildlife art. After she had been expelled from many schools for being a disruptive influence her father took it upon himself to teach her art. She followed the standard method of learning art at the time, which involved copying existing artworks, and sketching from plaster models. She then graduated to drawing and painting animals around Paris where she lived at the time, as well as her own pets. She also studied anatomy by disecting animals at local abattoirs.

ROSA BONHEUR
(French, 1822-1899)
The Horse Fair , ca. 1852
Oil on canvas, 10 1/2 x 25"
Elisabeth H. Gates Fund, 1927 Although radical in the way she lived her personal life, Bonheur was politically and artistically conservative. She worked in a very traditional way, making sketches and studies in preparation for larger, final paintings. This is an oil study for her most famous painting, The Horse Fair. The final version of The Horse Fair was shown in Paris in 1853 and received enthusiastically. The work also attained widespread popularity in England, and engravings were made and sold in a number of other countries as well. Rosa Bonheur was the first woman to receive a cross of the Legion of Honor in France, a reward for outstanding achievement in her field. The honor was bestowed upon her personally by the Empress Eugenie, wife of emperor Napoleon III, in June 1865. The empress wanted to show, as she said, that "genius has no sex."
SUGGESTIONS FOR HANDS-ON ACTIVITIES AND DISCUSSIONS
  • Have the children write a story about one of the characters (men or horses) in the painting, including why the character is at the horse fair, how he got there and what will happen after the fair.
