Bosch, Hieronymus
An extraordinary painter who stands apart from the prevailing Flemish traditions in painting. His style was unique, strikingly free, and his symbolism, unforgettably vivid, remains unparalleled to this day. Marvellous and terrifying, he expresses an intense pessimism and reflects the anxieties of his time, one of social and political upheaval.
He spent his entire artistic career in the small Dutch town of Hertogenbosch (near Antwerp) from which he derived his name. Hieronymus Bosch was a member of the religious Brotherhood of Our Lady, for whom he painted several altarpieces for the Cathedral of Saint John's, Hertogenbosch, all of which are now lost. The artist probably never went far from home, although records exist of a commission in 1504 from Philip the Handsome (later king of Castile), for a lost Last Judgment altarpiece. None of Bosch's pictures are dated, although the artist signed many of them.
At the time of his death, Hieronymus Bosch was internationally celebrated as an eccentric painter of religious visions who dealt in particular with the torments of hell. During his lifetime Hieronymus Bosch's art works were in the inventories of noble families of the Netherlands, Austria, and Spain, and they were imitated in a number of oil paintings and prints throughout the 16th century, especially in the works of Pieter Bruegel.

Bosch, Hieronymus, or Jerom Bos u key Garden of Earthly Delights (Prado) appear to be intricate allegories; their symbolism, however, is obscure and has consistently defied unified interpretation. Bosch clearly had an interest in the grotesque, the diabolical, the exuberant, and the macabre. He also may have been the first European painter to depict scenes of everyday life, although often with a strong element of the bizarre. King Philip II of Spain collected some of his finest creations. The Temptation of St. Anthony (Lisbon) and The Last Judgment were recurring themes. Other examples of his art may be seen in the Escorial and in Brussels. Examples of the Adoration of the Magi are in the Metropolitan Museum and in the Philadelphia Museum, which also has the Mocking of Christ.

spelled JHERONIMUS BOS, pseudonym of JEROME VAN AEKEN, also spelled AQUEN, or AKEN, also called JEROEN ANTHONISZOON (b. c. 1450, 's Hertogenbosch, Brabant [now in The Netherlands]d. Aug. 9, 1516, 's Hertogenbosch), brilliant and original northern European painter of the late Middle Ages whose work reveals an unusual iconography of a complex and individual style. Although at first recognized as a highly imaginative "creator of devils" and a powerful inventor of seeming nonsense full of satirical meaning, Bosch demonstrated insight into the depths of the mind and an ability to depict symbols of life and creation. Bosch was a pessimistic and stern moralist who had neither illusions about the rationality of human nature nor confidence in the kindness of a world that had been corrupted by man's presence in it. His paintings are sermons, addressed often to initiates and consequently difficult to translate. Unable to unlock the mystery of the artist's works, critics at first believed that he must have been affiliated with secret sects. Although the themes of his work were religious, his choice of symbols to represent the temptation and eventual ensnarement of man in earthly evils caused many critics to view Bosch as a practitioner of the occult arts. More recent scholarship views Bosch as a talented artist who possessed deep insight into human character and as one of the first artists to represent abstract concepts in his work. A number of exhaustive interpretations of Bosch's work have been put forth in recent years, but there remain many obscure details.

Bosch's pictures have always fascinated viewers, but in earlier centuries it was widely assumed that his diabolic scenes were intended merely to amuse or titillate, most people regarded him as "the inventor of monsters and chimeras." Philip II, though, collected his works more for education than for entertainment. A Dutch art historian in the early 17th century described Bosch's paintings chiefly as "wondrous and strange fantasies" often less pleasant than gruesome to look at'. In the 20th century, however, scholars decided that Bosch's art has a more profound significance, and there have been many attempts to explain its origins and meaning. Some writers saw him as a sort of 15th century surrealist and linked his name with that of Salvator Dali. For others, Bosch's art reflects mysterious practices of the Middle Ages. No matter what explanation and comprehension of his art might be, Bosch remains the most extravagant painter of his time. Read the rest of Bosch's biography...

Hieronymous Bosch
The Unearthly Gardener
by Kyla Ward
First Appeared in Tabula Rasa#2
What are we to make of a picture such as The Garden of Earthly Delights , painted in the late fifteenth century but seeming to have appropriated the freedom of expression and the freedom from the literal and hieratic that is surely modern? Ideas of morality and censorship, like so many others, run in a more or less straight, ascending line from some dark past, where beauty and love were straight-jacketed, inquiry stifled and imagination burned at the stake. Rather like the image of the Soviet Union up to the dissolution, or Nazi Germany. In the case of the works of Hieronymous Bosch, or more accurately, Hieronymous of Hertogenbosch, two corrections to these truisms must be made immediately.

Bosch, Hieronymus: The Garden of Earthly Delight
c. 1504; Triptych, plus shutters; Oil on panel; Central panel, 220 x 195 cm; Wings, 220 x 97 cm; Museo del Prado, Madrid Bosch's most famous and unconventional picture is The Garden of Earthly Delights (c.1500; Prado, Madrid) which, like most of his other ambitious works, is a large, 3-part altarpiece , called a triptych. This painting was probably made for the private enjoyment of a noble family. It is named for the luscious garden in the central panel, which is filled with cavorting nudes and giant birds and fruit. The triptych depicts the history of the world and the progression of sin. Beginning on the outside shutters with the creation of the world, the story progresses from Adam and Eve and original sin on the left panel to the torments of hell, a dark, icy, yet fiery nightmarish vision, on the right. The Garden of Delights in the center illustrates a world deeply engaged in sinful pleasures. In reference to astrological alignments at the time this was painted, a lot of the instruments of torture are also musical instruments. Creation of the World

Hieronymus Bosch spent much of his life in the Dutch town of s'Hertogenbosch, after which he was named. This town was outside the mainstream of Dutch Art of this time, which lends credence to the belief that Bosch led a very secluded life. Few facts exist concerning other aspects of his life except that it is known he married one of the wealthiest heiresses in the Netherlands and died at the age of sixty in 1516. Bosch's art contains images that draw from religious symbolism, fantasy, nightmare and folk legend. The roots of modern movements, particularly Surrealism can be seen in his many involved and complicated works. The fact that none of his paintings, of which about forty survive, is dated, makes it very difficult to trace his artistic development and add to the mystery that surrounds him as an artist. It is however, through his art, that we must learn about the man. His pictures follow a regular form clearly illustrating the tensions of the times. Bosch was quite obsessed with portraying the sins of men and his vision of the punishments for and consequences of such actions. In The Garden of Earthly Delights we see mankind being tempted to indulge in excessive behaviours and the resultant punishment with Bosch's own vision of hell. It is indeed a nightmare with bird-like creatures devouring sinners and digesting them into a pitch black pit where they are condemned to serve the darker forces.
