Alessandro Botticelli
Biography Page One
Alessandro (Sandro) Botticelli was born in Florence in 1444 or 1445, the fourth son of Mariano di Vanni Filipepi, a tanner. Alessandro's nickname was derived from the one given to his eldest brother Giovanni, who, because of his corpulence, was called "Il Botticello" (little barrel). It is believed that Botticelli was apprenticed as a goldsmith before being sent, probably in the beginning of the 1460s, to Fra Filippo Lippi in order to study painting.
Since 1470, Botticelli ran his own workshop in Florence and, in 1472, he became a member of the St. Luke's Guild. His early woks were mostly small religious pieces. In 1470, he was commissioned... Sandro Botticelli (
Renaissance Botticelli, a Florentine painter, was one of the most distinctive and popular of Renaissance artists. Apprenticed to Filippo Lippi, he developed a highly personalized style taking Filippo Lippi's linear approach to new heights of gracefulness. His work was elegantly executed with a rich language of sometimes highly personal and melancholy gesture. By 1480 Botticelli had is own workshop with assistants. He spent almost all of his life working for the great families of Florence, especially the Medici family, for whom he painted portraits, most notably the Giuliano de' Medici. Adoration of the Magi was painted on commission (though not for the Medicis), and contains likenesses of the Medici family. His ideal of feminine beauty is shown in his mythological paintings for the Medici - most notably in his most famous painting, The Birth Of Venus (1482-84). The classical Goddess Venus is emerging from the water on a shell, held up by the Zephyrs, symbols of spiritual passions. The naked goddess isn't then a symbol of earthly but of spiritual love, like an ancient marble statue, slim and long-limbed, with harmonious features.

Sandro Botticelli Biography:
  • Sandro Botticelli was born in Italy in 1444. He was one of Florence's favorite artists. Botticelli's real name was Alessandro Filipepi. He became known as Botticelli when he went to live with his older brother, Botticello. He died in the year 15 19. He died a lonely man having done little or no more painting in the last ten years. It was not until over 350 years after his death that the world recognized his importance in art.
Interesting Facts:
  • He was known for his religious pictures but his most famous works were paintings of mythological creatures and gods from ancient Greek and Roman stories. He was more interested in making his paintings beautiful in a fantasy kind of way. He used his paint brush like a pen or a pencil to outline, or add lines around the people in his painting. His line work help give a feeling of movement to his painting.
Famous Works: Botticelli's most famous painting was " Primavera ." In this painting the people represent the wonderful things that happen in spring time. He placed Venus, the Goddess of Love, right in the middle of this picture and cupid is above her head. The lady in the pretty dress with flowers could be Springtime herself. The west wind flying through the air is blowing warm breezes. The other people are the nymphs and gods that help make spring such a wonderful time of the year. Personal Thoughts: "I don't like Botticelli 's paintings because he doesn't draw or paint real good because it is not realistic enough."

It was also said that he was a jokester or a prankster. When Botticelli was 14 or 15 he was sent to the great painter, Fra Filippo. There he learned how to mix colors and clean brushes. Botticelli was greatly influenced by his teacher. By 1465, Botticelli had his own studio. After the age of 56 no paintings were found that were painted by him. Botticelli died alone and infirm. Sandro Botticelli
A famous Florentine painter . Born at Florence about 1447; died in the same city, 1510. Botticelli's name is properly Allesandro di Mariano Filipepi Mariano Filipepi being his father , but he is called after the Florentine painter and goldsmith, Botticelli, to whom he was first apprenticed. Later on he was a pupil of Fra Filippo Lippi and learned from this master to paint in the ideal manner of Fra Angelico . Through the influence of Verocchio and the brothers Pollajuoli this idealism was combined with the naturalness of Masaccio . These qualities explain Botticelli's great influence over later painters Botticelli's life was a retired one passed largely in very modest circumstances. We know , however that he was in the employ of the Medici and other prominent Florentine families from about 1483 to 1500. Although never inclined to frivolity he was yet influence by the worldly spirit of the age until Savonarola's powerful call to repentance aroused his moral nature and guided his powers, it now seems, into entirely new paths. He never

One of his most famous pictures represents not a Christian legend but a classical myth - the birth of Venus. The classical poets had been known all through the Middle Ages, but only at the time of the Renaissance Fra Angelico , perhaps even the art of the fourteenth century - works such as Simone Martini 's Annunciation Botticelli's Venus is so beautiful that we do not notice the unnatural length of her neck, the steep fall of her shoulders and the queer way her left arm is hinged to the body. Or, rather, we should say that these liberties which Botticelli took with nature in order to achieve a graceful outline add to the beauty and harmony of the design because they enhance the impression of an infinitely tender and delicate being, wafted to our shores as a gift from Heaven. This secular work was painted onto canvas, which was a less expensive painting surface than the wooden panels used in church and court pictures. A wooden surface would certainly be impractical for a work on such a scale. Canvas is known to have been the preferred material for the painting of non-religious and pagan subjects that were sometimes commissioned to decorate country villas in 15th-century Italy.

Botticelli, Sandro,
original name ALESSANDRO DI MARIANO FILIPEPI (b. 1445, Florence [Italy]d. May 17, 1510, Florence), Florentine early Renaissance painter whose "Birth of Venus" ( c. 1485) and "Primavera" (1477-78) are often said to epitomize for modern viewers the spirit of the Renaissance. His ecclesiastical commissions included work for all the major churches of Florence and for the Sistine Chapel in Rome. His name is derived from his elder brother Giovanni, a pawnbroker, who was called Il Botticello ("The Little Barrel").
Early development.
Reliable biographical information concerning Botticelli is, unfortunately, in short supply. Documentary evidence indicates that he was still in school in 1458 at the relatively advanced age of 13. Giorgio Vasari , a biographer of Renaissance Italian artists, reports that Botticelli's earliest training was in a goldsmith's shop. Of Botticelli's subsequent apprenticeship to the painter Fra Filippo Lippi there is no doubt; most of Botticelli's earliest works have at one time or another carried an attribution to Lippi or his school, and in many cases the final attribution is still under debate. From Lippi, Botticelli learned a more intimately conceived version of the monumental and generalizing manner of the great innovator of Florentine painting
