Inspired by medieval, classical, and biblical themes, his paintings of graceful women, angels, gods, and heroes are dreamlike and sentimental. He also designed mosaics, tapestries, and stained-glass windows for churches throughout England. A poetic young man from Birmingham who, like Morris, was preparing for a career in the church, he never had any academic art training and consequently developed his own very distinctive approach, using medieval models as his template but invigorating them with a completely fresh and modern look. "Burne-Jones used as his subjects a wide range of legends, myths, and spiritual stories - using images and ideas gathered not just from the Christian viewpoint as previous artists had done. He was not much appreciated early on in his career; it took the opening of the Grosvenor Gallery in 1877 - for anti-R.A. artists to show their work - before he received much critical notice. "Edward Burne-Jones traveled to Italy in 1859 with John Ruskin where he saw and greatly admired the early Italian Renaissance painters like Botticelli da Vinci Michaelangelo , and Mantegna from whose work he took a great deal of inspiration. He greatly admired

English symbolist. He spent the first twenty years of his life in Birmingham, an industrial town. In 1853 he went to Exeter College, Oxford, where he met William Morris, who became a lifelong friend. Both men wanted to enter the church, but after travelling in France Burne-Jones decided to become a painter in 1855.
He met Gabriel Dante Rossetti in 1856 and the latter gave him some informal lessons and influenced his style. Burne-Jones became a member of the Preraphaelite Brotherhood and travelled through Italy with Rossetti. In 1860 he married Georgia MacDonald, the sister of an old school friend.
In 1862 he visited Italy once more, this time with his wife and his patron John Ruskin. In 1870 he had an affair with his model Maria Zambaco, but he ended it because he felt remorse towards his wife, who was possibly in love with William Morris herself.
His paintings made Burne-Jones very famous and in 1894 he was created baronet. The largest collection of his work can be found at the Birmingham Art Gallery. Burne-Jones died in 1898 and was buried in Rottingdon (near Brighton), where he had a country home.

Chiefly associated with the second generation of Pre-Raphaelites, Burne-Jones also worked closely with designer William Morris throughout his life.
Edward Coley Burne-Jones was born at 11 Bennetts Hill, Birmingham, on August 28 . Within days his mother, Elizabeth, died and the child was raised by his father, also Edward, a gilder and frame maker. While birth certificates were not introduced until three years later, a record of his baptism at St Philip's Church (now Birmingham Cathedral) on 1 January 1834 is stored in the Birmingham Archives and Heritage Service . He later designed the magnificent stained glass windows for St Philip's.
Burne-Jones spent the first 20 years of his life in Birmingham, then a grimy industrial town. His earliest memories are said to have been of the city's celebrations for Queen Victoria's coronation.
