Caillebotte originally sought a career as a lawyer, but his youthful interest in painting led him to study under Léon Bonnat. Caillebotte soon became a friend and a major patron of the group of artists known as Impressionists While Caillebotte's own style belongs to the school of Realism , he also shared certain traits of the Impressionists. He is best known for his paintings of urban Paris . These paintings were quite controversial for their banal and often lower-class subjects as well as the cropping and "zooming in" techniques he employed as a result of his interest in photography. Caillebotte used his wealth to become something of a renaissance man as he collected the art of his contemporaries and stamps (his collection is now in the British Museum ), as well as became an expert in orchid horticulture, yacht building, and even

CAILLEBOTTE Gustave
1848 - 1894 (French)
Gustave Caillebotte (August 19, 1848 - February 21, 1894), was a French painter and supporter of the Impressionist movement in art.
Caillebotte's painting style seems to belong to the school of realism, although he helped organize the first Impressionist painting exhibition and was himself an enthusiastic collector of Impressionist works. Caillebotte inherited a sizable fortune after his father's death in 1874, which aided in his patronage.
Caillebotte's painting themes were catholic. For example, he painted portraits and interior scenes, urban life, still lifes, and landscapes and seascapes. For many years, Caillebotte's reputation as a painter was superseded by his reputation as a supporter of the art. However, art historians are now re-evaluatinng his contribution to the field.
Caillebotte's, "L'Homme au balcon, boulevard Haussmann," painted in 1880, was sold for more than US$14.3 million in 2000.

Gustave Caillebotte: Urban Impressionist
from Abbeville Press
Caillebotte's vivid representations of Parisian life bridged the gap between Realism and Impressionism during the 1870s and early 1880s. His Paris Street: Rainy Day and Floorscraperseach the subject of a fascinating, extensively illustrated analysis in this bookhave become icons of the Impressionists' devotion to scenes of modern urban life. Prepared by an international team of scholars to accompany the major 1994-95 retrospective organized by the Réunion des Musées Nationaux/Musée d'Orsay, Paris, and The Art Institute of Chicago, Gustave Caillebotte: Urban Impressionist reproduces 89 of his paintings and 28 of his drawings and studies, many of them from little-known private collections. Thoughtful essays examine both his work and his crucial role as an early patron and promoter of Impressionism. A chronology, list of exhibitions, and selected bibliography provide additional invaluable information. List Price: $85.00

Gustave Caillebotte, b. Aug. 19, 1848, d. Feb. 21, 1894, was a French painter and a generous patron of the impressionists , whose own works, until recently, were neglected. He was an engineer by profession, but also attended the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He met Edgar Degas Claude Monet , and Pierre Auguste Renoir in 1874 and helped organize the first impressionist exhibition in Paris that same year. He participated in later shows and painted some 500 works in a more realistic style than that of his friends. Caillebotte's most intriguing paintings are those of the broad, new Parisian boulevards. The boulevards were painted from high vantage points and were populated with elegantly clad figures strolling with the expressionless intensity of somnambulists, as in Boulevard Vu d'en Haut (1880; private collection, Paris). Caillebotte's superb collection of impressionist paintings was left to the French government on his death. With considerable reluctance the government accepted part of the collection. Caillebotte's wealth and youthfulness (he was 14 years younger than Degas) set him apart from the other French impressionists. A patron and publicist of the impressionist movement as well as a painter himself, he has been sorely neglected until recently. His pictures show us the world's sheer randomness as well as its patterns of order. Like Munch and Van Gogh, Caillebotte manipulated perspective to produce overwrought sensations of depth. He captured the boulevard's chaotic variety and the depersonalization of the modern city. His tautly focused realism, wide-angled spaces and cooly detached viewpoint upset his contemporaries, yet in today's cinematic culture his paintings resonate with familiarity. This superbly illustrated study by a New York University art professor does full justice, in text and pictures, to... Gustave Caillebotte and the Fashioning of Identify in Impressionist Paris

Caillebotte Gustave Biography and Painting
Caillebotte Gustave
Caillebotte Gustave , French (Paris, 1848-Geneviliers, 1894). Caillebotte defined the affluent Frenchman. He was an entrepreneur, dabbling in many cultural pursuits and sports. He was a naval architect (engineer), but also attended the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris . He participated enthusiastically in the Impressionist movement , painting over 500 works and collecting many by his friends.
After the death of his father, he inherited a large amount of money, which he used to buy Impressionist art and enjoy his life to the fullest in other ways. For example, he owned many yachts which he raced, including eight he designed himself. He had a unique style of painting which differed from his fellow impressionists by being more realistic. He is generally considered a part of High Impressionism (the late 1870s). For this reason, his first painting was rejected from The Salon in 1875.
However, he soon became good friends with Alfred Sisley Pierre Auguste Renoir , and Claude Monet . He showed with the Impressionists all but twice. He also generously underwrited the cost of their exhibitions. Many of Caillebotte's counterparts focused their paintings on the outdoors and country life. On the otherhand, he was interested in the newly industrialized France.
