Caravaggio, Michelangelo Merisi da
Caravaggio (1573-1610). Probably the most revolutionary artist of his time, the Italian painter Caravaggio abandoned the rules that had guided a century of artists before him. They had idealized the human and religious experience. He was born Michelangelo Merisi on Sept. 28, 1573, in Caravaggio, Italy. As an adult he would become known by the name of his birthplace. Orphaned at age 11, he was apprenticed to the painter Simone Peterzano of Milan for four years. At some time between 1588 and 1592, Caravaggio went to Rome and worked as an assistant to painters of lesser skill. About 1595 he began to sell his paintings through a dealer. The dealer brought Caravaggio to the attention of Cardinal Francesco del Monte. Through the cardinal, Caravaggio was commissioned, at age 24, to paint for the church of San Luigi dei Francesi. In its Contarelli Chapel Caravaggio's realistic naturalism first fully appeared in three scenes he created of the life of St. Matthew. The works caused public outcry, however, because of their realistic and dramatic nature. The Calling of Saint Matthew The Inspiration of Saint Matthew

Michelangelo Merisi, called later Caravaggio, was born in either Milan, or a town of Caravaggio near Milan, as the son of a ducal architect. His early training started in 1584 under Simone Peterzano, a little known pupil of Titian , and continued till 1588.
In 1592, Caravaggio went to Rome. His contact with Giuseppe Cesare d’Arpino (1568-1640), the most popular painter and art dealer in Rome at the turn of the century, brought him recognition. Through the art business Caravaggio met his first patron Cardinal Francesco Maria Del Monte, who not only held out the possibility of working independently, but also secured for him his first public commission: side paintings in the Contarelli Chapel , San Luigi dei Francesi. His paintings, which combine a realistic observation of the human state, both physical and emotional, with a dramatic use of lighting, had a formative influence on the Baroque school of painting Caravaggio trained as a painter in Milan under a master who had himself trained under Titian . In his early twenties Caravaggio moved to Rome where, during the late 16th and early 17th centuries, many huge new churches and palazzi were being built and paintings were needed to fill them. During the Counter-Reformation the Roman Catholic Church searched for religious art with which to counter the threat of Protestantism , and for this task the artificial conventions of Mannerism , which had ruled art for almost a century, no longer seemed adequate. Caravaggio's novelty was a radical

• Born: 29 September 1571 Birthplace: Milan, Italy Died: 18 July 1610 Best Known As: The brawling Italian painter who did The Calling of Saint Matthew
Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, known simply as Caravaggio, was an Italian artist at the turn of the 17th century whose influence rivals that of Michelangelo when it comes to Western art. But while Michelangelo was known for a devotion to the idealized form of body and Christian spirit, Caravaggio was known for his ability to realistically capture moments of human emotion, often in violent depictions of Christianity's sacred stories. Caravaggio apprenticed in Milan, and in the early 1590s made his way to Rome. He made a splash in Rome, first with collectors and other artists, then with commissions from the Vatican, including The Calling of Saint Matthew and The Martyrdom of Saint Matthew . By all accounts Caravaggio was a belligerent cuss, and his brief career as a famous artist is marked by episodes of violent behavior and trouble with the law. After killing a man in Rome in 1606 he was on the lam, finding haven in Naples, Malta and Sicily, where his extraordinary talent and society connections bailed him out of one scrape after another. Along the way, he mastered

Plot
Writer/director Derek Jarman injects his patented iconoclasm in this biography of Renaissance artist Michelangelo Merisa da Caravaggio. Nigel Terry plays the title role, whom (according to Jarman) essentially told his own life story in his paintings. Caravaggio travelled among thieves and prostitutes, many of whom were his models. He once killed a man, kept a deaf/mute child as a virtual slave, and squandered every penny he ever made. That we should care anything about so miserable and obscure a personality is a tribute to Jarman's filmmaking savvyand the number of elements from his own well-publicized life that he injects into the film. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
Review
Derek Jarman 's first 35mm film and one of his most mainstream works, this iconoclastic biopic explores the connections among sex, art, and money in the complicated life of 17th century painter Caravaggio. Deliberately injecting modern anachronisms into his portrait of Renaissance Italy, Jarman eschews traditional biography in favor of key moments in Caravaggio's relationships with his patrons and especially his models Ranuccio and Lena. Through Caravaggio's deathbed memories, Jarman reveals the impact of Caravaggio's taboo sexuality on his church-funded paintings, as hustlers and prostitutes portray saints for a system corrupted by financial imperative. Recreating Caravaggio's most famous works with live actors, and shooting in a style true to Caravaggio's chiaroscuro aesthetic, Jarman creates a seductive yet foreboding visual atmosphere surrounding

The film is a fictionalized re-telling of the life of Baroque painter Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio Jarman's film is involved with the love triangle of Caravaggio ( Nigel Terry ), Lena ( Tilda Swinton ) and Ranuccio ( Sean Bean ) and dwells upon Caravaggio's use of street people, drunks and prostitutes as models for his intense, usually religious paintings (see the article on the painter for examples). As with Caravaggio's use of contemporary dress for his Biblical figures, Jarman depicts his Caravaggio in a bar lit with electric lights or another character using an electronic calculator. The film is notable for its texture and attention to detail, the intense performances and the idiosyncratic humor. By presenting Caravaggio as one of the founders of the
