Caravaggio
Art by Caravaggio
Caravaggio was an Italian painter whose revolutionary technique of tenebrism, or dramatic, selective illumination of form out of deep shadow, became a hallmark of Baroque painting. Caravaggio was the best exemplar of naturalistic painting in the early 17th century. Caravaggio was a "wild" and violent painter - screams of terror and images of horror assume a prominent place in many of Caravaggio's works.

There are several other copies (e.g. in Hampton Court, in the Sabin collection, London) but all of these copies are derived from an original by Caravaggio. In none of them does the boy peel a pear, as sources indicate, but another fruit, perhaps a nectarine; the same fruit lies on the table before the boy. There is a remarkable resemblance between the facial types of these copies and those of the angel in the St Francis (Hartford) and the boy on the left in the Musicians at the Metropolitan Museum, New York.

Among Caravaggio's early works, this painting, in which the pose of the arm may recall his debt to the kneeling shepherd in a fresco by Peterzano, belongs to the small group which has always been seen as self-portraits. The livid colours of the subject's face, his teasing smile and the mock seriousness of his mythological dignity all reinforce the attempt to undermine the lofty pretensions of

"I've often thought that the reason he wanted to make films was for the company, that there was something in him that was so gregarious and so valued. He loved being in a group, just as he loved being solitary...he's telling his own story over and over again.
He was the material of his own work."
    - Tilda Swinton The MAN
Avant-garde, underground, experimental...you name it, Derek Jarman helped define it. A painter, a poet, a gay rights activist, a filmmakerhe combined all of his passions together when he picked up a video camera, an artist in every sense of the word. Frequently experimenting with Super 8mm film, he challenged the way viewers interpreted movies, and frequently infused his works with his own style of "gay filmmaking". This new four-disc set presents four of his filmstwo art house, two avant-gardeavailable on DVD for the first time (Carvaggio and Wittgenstein will also be released separately; The Angelic Conversation and Blue are exclusive to this set). The MOVIES Caravaggio (1986) Largely considered one of Jarman's most successful efforts, this 1986 biopic chronicles the life of 17th Century Italian painter Michelangelo Caravaggioa sometimes controversial artist who led a tumultuous life, one exacerbated by his fame. The film starts on July 18, 1610 as the artist (brilliantly played by Nigel Terry) lies on his deathbed: "Four years on the runso many labels on the luggage, and hardly a friendly face." Attended to by his loyal assistant, the mute Jerusaleme (Spencer Leigh), Caravaggio reflects upon his life, taking us back in time: "I built my world as divine mystery...found the god in the wine and took into my heart. I painted myself as Bacchus and took on his fate: a wild, orgiastic dismemberment. I raise this fragile glass and drink to you, my audience...man's character is his fate."

    Borghese Gallery, Rome.
  • Biography
Michelangelo Merisi was born in Caravaggio. He lost his parents soon, and this is why he went to Milan. He suffered a lot of problems, but he knew how to progress inside picture world. By 1589-1590 he went to Rome and had to suffer strong calamitys, but in 1594 met Cavalier dArpino and started working in his important studio specialized in still life picture. Caravaggios life started to be much better. He stayed for 8 months with Cavalier dArpino, later he set his own studio. He continued with small profane picture which was sold thanks to a dealer who had a shop near San Luigi dei Francesi . The dealer brought Caravaggio to the attention of cardinal Franceso del Monte , he saw Caravaggios pictures and surprised immediataly. Francesco del Monte became his protector and this meant a huge change in Caravaggios carreer. Between 1595 and 1596 Caravaggio went to live with the cardinal in Madama Palace . From now Caravaggio will be commissioned to paint for San Luigi dei Francesi . He was only 24 years old.
Bad luck appeared soon. Other jealous painters began to attack Caravaggio. This point and the bad character of our painter envolved him in problems with justice. A crime made him to leave Rome and went to Genova. Later, Caravaggio came back Rome with support from his protectors, but he was exiled because of a new crime. From then, he had a wandering life, among different places of the italian geography: Naples, Malta, Sicily, Mesina, Palermo... . In 1610 Cavavaggio died in Porto Ercole, he was 37 years old.
