Emily Carr is one of Canada’s greatest artists, best known for her paintings of west coast native villages and forest and seashore landscapes.
Born in Victoria in 1871, early studies took her to San Francisco and London.
Her interest in coastal villages began with a visit to a Nootka reserve at Ucluelet in 1899 and led to subsequent visits to native coastal villages in 1908, 1909 and 1910. In 1910, Carr travelled to France to study, and her exposure to the artistic milieu there opened up a new world of colour and light.
Back in British Columbia in 1912, Carr made an important sketching trip to native sites at Alert Bay, Skeena River and the Queen Charlotte Islands, deeply committed to capturing the native people and the villages with their powerful totem poles.
Carr was ahead of her time on the coast, and her struggle to survive resulted in very little painting from 1913 until the pivotal year of 1927, when she was visited by ethnologist Marius Barbeau and Eric Brown, director of the National Gallery. Her work was subsequently exhibited in an historic west coast show in Ottawa, and when she traveled to it, she met prominent fellow artists such as Lawren Harris, with whom she formed an inspiring friendship.
Carr visited native sites again in 1928 and 1930, and sketching expeditions into her beloved forest continued - to the west coast of Vancouver Island and Port Renfrew, as well as locations near Victoria. Carr’s great inspiration captured the very essence of BC forest with its energy and mystery.

    Doris Shadbolt Biography and Notes
Emily Carr (December 13, 1871- March 2, 1945) was a Canadian artist and writer. She was born in Victoria, British Columbia, and moved to San Francisco in 1890 to study art after the death of her parents. In 1899 she travelled to England to deepen her studies where she spent time at the Westminster School of Art in London and at various studio schools in Cornwall and elsewhere. In 1910, she spent a year studying art at the Academie Colarossi in Paris and elsewhere in France before moving back to British Columbia permanently the following year. Carr was most heavily influenced by the landscape and First Nations cultures of British Columbia, and Alaska. Having first spent time in a neighbouring native community in 1898, in 1908 she was inspired by a visit to Skagway to began to paint the totem poles of the coastal Haida, Tsimshian, Tlingit and other communities, in an attempt to record and learn from as many as possible. She was obliged by financial considerations to return permanently to Victoria with a few years in Vancouver, both of which towns were, at that time, conservative artistically. Influenced by styles such as postimpressionism and the Fauve School, her work was alien to those around her and remained unknown to and unrecognized by the greater art world for many years. For more than a decade she worked as a potter, dog breeder and boarding house landlady having given up on her artistic career.

This book reflects more than a decade of meticulous research and includes reproductions of over 200 paintings, charcoals, and drawings, as well as extensive quotes from the artist, who was also a writer.
Customer Reviews
Kindred Spirit an amazing and interesting artist not that well known in the united states I heard about this artist from a friend. I also visited Canada recently, altho not in the area where Emily Carr lived. She is revered in Canada but not nearly as well known in the United States. I personally love her paintings. To me they perfectly respresent the times she lived in and her not so easy life.

Four Pictures by Emily Carr
Nicolas Debon
Sept 2003
Hardcover
From School Library Journal Grade 4-7-Debon has distilled four periods in the Canadian artist's life (1871-1945) into enticing vignettes that illuminate her passions, determination, health problems, relationships with fellow Group of Seven artists, and, most of all, her dramatic progression as a painter. Presented in a comic-book format reminiscent of French classics "Tintin" and "Asterix," the book draws on Carr's extensive journals to tell her story primarily in her own words and also includes a brief biographical prologue. Each chapter opens with a faithful reproduction of one of her paintings. Of the four pieces of art, only the story of Carr's Scorned as Timber, Beloved of the Sky is fully integrated with the text, allowing readers to see the scene that inspired it through the artist's eyes. While the book lacks the specific... Forest Lover
