Explore the life, times, and works of art of the female American Impressionist Mary Cassatt through her biography and a guide to her works of art.
http://www.metmuseum.org/explore/cassatt/html/index.html
M ary Cassatt (1844-1926) was a unique artist because she was a woman who succeeded in what was in the nineteenth century a predominantly male profession, because she was the only American invited to exhibit with a group of independent artists later known as the Impressionists, and because she responded in a very distinctive way to their mandate to portray modern life. In regard to Degas's invitation to exhibit with the Impressionists, she told her biographer, Achille Ségard: I accepted with joy. At last, I could work with absolute independence without considering the opinion of a jury. I had already recognized who were my true masters. I admired Manet, Courbet, and Degas. I hated conventional art. Explore the life times , and work of the artist Mary Cassatt. Life

Cassatt, Mary
Mary Stevenson Cassatt
Cassatt was born in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania, which is now part of Pittsburgh. She was born into favorable circumstances: her father, Robert Simpson Cassat (later Cassatt), was a successful stockbroker and land speculator, and her mother, Katherine Kelso Johnston, came from a banking family. Cassatt's popular reputation is based on an extensive series of rigorously drawn, tenderly observed, yet largely unsentimental paintings and prints on the theme of the mother and child. The earliest dated work on this subject is the drypoint Gardner Held by His Mother (an impression inscribed "Jan/88" is in the New York Public Library), although she had painted a few earlier works on the theme. Some of these works depict her own relatives, friends, or clients, although in her later years she generally used professional models in compositions that are often reminiscent of Italian Renaissance depictions of the Madonna and Child. After 1900, she concentrated almost exclusively on mother-and-child subjects. wikipedia Displaying to (of products) Result Pages: View All Model Product Name+ Price ex VAT ... Price Buy Now

Art Institute of Chicago Chicago, Illinois www.artic.edu Mary Cassatt: Modern Woman T he Art Institute of Chicago is proud to present Mary Cassatt: Modern Woman , the first retrospective in 30 years of the work of one of the greatest artists this country has produced. On view in the Art Institute's Regenstein Hall, the Daniel F. and Ada L. Rice Building, October 13, 1998, through January 10, 1999, the exhibition brings together approximately 100 of the Cassatt's most beautiful and compelling paintings, pastels, drawings, and prints, from public and private collections worldwide. Mary Cassatt has been organized by the Art Institute in collaboration with the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (to be shown there February 14-May 9, 1999), and the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., where it will be seen June 6 -September 6, 1999. Mary Cassatt (1844-1926) is an artist of surprisesmostly small, but often subtle and profound. Known to this day as a "painter of mothers and children," a sobriquet given in her lifetime, she approached this, her favorite subject, with the surprisingly unsentimental but sympathetic clarity she used to address all her subjects. Born into a well-to-do, fairly conventional American family, Cassatt became a genteel rebel, traveling and living alone, partaking of the bohemian life in Paris while developing a magnificent painter's eye and businesswoman's head. She was the only American (and one of only three women) to exhibit with the Impressionists in Parisbecoming close friends with some of thembut moved very much in her own direction after that group splintered, coming to draw on such disparate inspirations as Symbolism and Japanese prints.

THE BOATING PARTY
by Mary Cassatt
Let's visit The Artchive to see "The Boating Party"
Mary Cassatt was born in Pennsylvania in 1844. She was the fourth child of the five children born to the family. When she was seven her family moved to Europe. They wanted their children to understand European ways and the people who lived there. They traveled a lot and she had visited many countries by the time she was 10 years old. After four years they returned to America.
In those days, women did not have professions, and there were very few women artists. Her family did not approve when she decided that she would become an artist.
She studied first in Philadelphia. She happened to be in Chicago in 1871 when the huge fire broke out. She lost many of her paintings in that fire.
She went to Paris to study painting. Her mother traveled with her to Paris and then she returned home and left Mary there to study. She met Camille Pissarro. He taught her Impressionism, a method of painting where the artists used small strokes of unmixed colors to create an image. She once said of Pissarro that "he could have taught stones to draw correctly" because he was such a good teacher. She spent a lot of time at the Louvre Museum copying paintings of the famous artists.
She admired the work of Edgar Degas, and was able to meet him. They became good friends. Once when the Impressionist exhibition failed to include him, she also would not participate. She was a great asset to the Impressionist movement both financially and by helping to get the works into American museums.

See also: Impressionism Women Artists VIEW IMAGE LIST "...Mary Cassatt especially liked children, doting on her nieces and nephews and the offspring of friends. Naturalism and sensuality of a pure, elemental, and nonsexual sort are the hallmarks of Cassatt's portrayals of childhood during the 1880s and 1890s. An example is Children on the Shore , which she showed at the last Impressionist exhibition, in 1886. While this seaside subject is unique in her oeuvre, the close-up focus on the pair of toddlers and the firm draftsmanship are typical of the artist's style in the 1880s. In his review of the exhibition, Gustave Geffroy commented on this painting: "[It] has the sharp outline that things and people have on the sand with the background of water and sky. The short arms and the dollish faces let you guess the flesh under a thick laver of suntan." In the same review, Geffroy also responded to the sensuousness of Cassatt's rendering of youngsters in Children in a Garden , likening them to "flowers in the heat."
